Why am I'm being charged an early termination fee by DirectTV after they almost doubled their fees?

From December to January, Direct TV almost doubled our monthly charges. When I called, they said that the promotion had expired and that there was nothing they could do. I explained that their fees were too high and that  I would check out other providers. DirectTV did not mention any early termination fees. I then called AT&T Uverse and they said that there would be no charges for installation or other fees. AT&T said that they would cancel our DirectTV service. AT&T installed uVerse service on 1/20/17. The AT&T technican also said that he would cancel our Direct TV service. Of course, I received a bill today (1/28/17) from DirectTV and when I called DirectTV, they said that AT&T had not cancelled the DirectTV service and told me that I owed a $200 early termination fee. I explained the situation and they refused to do anything except demand the early termination fee. I feel like we were set up by AT&T. AT& T gets the new UVerse business and DirectTV gets to collect an early termiantion fee. I'll be cancelling the uVerse on Monday & they will probably want to charge me an early termination fee. I'll never do business with Direct TV again either. No wonder so many people want to to cut the cord.

How long were you a directv customer? If less than 2 years, that's why you have an early termination fee. Whether you realize it or not, you agreed to a 2 year contract when you signed up for Directv. You probably got a one year promotional price too which would explain why your bill went up.
