Battery life after 4.4.4 update

My Galxy S5 was recently forced to update to KitKat 4.4.4, and ever since then, the phone's performance is noticably worse. The biggest problem is the battery life. It's been cut in half, and the phone feels warmer. "Android System" is now the top user of battery power.

I've tried pulling the battery and sim card, turning off all of the auto sync features, disabled all the bloatware I could. Nothing is helping. I'm annoyed that I now have to carry a spare battery, when I used to get two days on a single charge.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Have you disabled Smart Switch in the Wi-Fi settings? With the new update Wi-Fi is continuously scanning for networks thus causing major battery drain.

Yes, smart switch is disabled. I've never used it, actually. But ever since 4.4.4, the 4G symbol periodically appears, even when WiFi is connected.

This is with smart switch OFF.

I was having all kinds of issues after the update. One of them was battery drain that I believe was caused by apps running in a weird state after the update. I got sick of messing with it and having to charge my phone 3 times a day so I just backed up and took a full reset. My battery life and performance are back to the way they were on 4.4.2. I know resetting sucks but so does having a slow unreliable phone.

Ughhh.... gotta love how the solution to every problem AT&T creates is a factory reset.

Do you know of a good walkthrough of the reset process? I'm clueless.

Hi there @ratzerman

I’d be happy to help with this battery issue! I would also recommend @TheManLee’s recommendation of a full factory reset as this will clear any conflicts on the device and start from a clean version of the operating system. To do this, you may first wish to backup the information currently on your device. Samsung Kies is excellent for this is it can quickly back up all of your information on your computer, making putting it all back onto your phone after the reset really easy. Once backed up, we can perform the factory reset.

I hope this helps!

Yeah I pretty much plan on a factory reset after any update these days. The reset process is pretty easy. First thing I would do is go download Samsung Kies 3 this will allow you to back most things up I would advise not to backup apps and settings. It’s pretty straight forward I always like to keeps things like texts, phone logs and obviously pictures and music. Once you reset just log back in to Google services and go to your play store profile there you will find all the apps you have ever downloaded in a list for easy reinstall.

Factory resetting goes as follows:

Settings>Backup and reset>Uncheck Back up my data>Reset Device

Once it’s all reset plug into Kies and do a restore. After that go to the play store and reinstall all your apps. Its’ a bit time consuming but the phone will run as it did before the update.

Sorry about the bad grammar doing this from my phone.

To the AT&T community support....

Thanks for the reply. I must say, though, that a factory reset is not a satisfactory solution. My phone operated perfectly before the 4.4.4 update. Now you're telling me that the only fix to a problem your company created is to start from scratch. The real solution is to stop releasing broken updates, or at least give your customers the choice of opting out of them.

while that maybe an update can break apps that you have installed and make them act weird.  Hince the reason for a factory reset.  There is no way for them to test every app combo.
