1. att does hold the updates back by about 4 weeks.

2.  You can flash stock boot images but you have to unlock your bootloader.

3.  The updates still come from google but ATT is a little slower getting them out.  This does not mater if its a att nexus 6 or one from google store or moto store.  The updates are held for those as well.

4.  The only thing ATT has done is add a boot splash and ringtones that are stored in the OEM partition on the phone.  You can root and delete the OEM partition.
