Stop AT&T forced system updates! (critical communications)

AT&T, I realize there is no option to disable or delay the updates on my device (more than a few times)... but certainly there is a way on your system to change this.   My AT&T device is a critical public safety device used at work, for work, especially in areas with limited radio coverage.   Having an incident unfold only to see my phone is in the middle of an update is NOT acceptable, and creates a huge liability.   I pay AT&T for network access and phone service, I do not need you deciding when my phone will be rendered completely useless for several minutes.Smiley Mad

To avoid this, all you had to do was delay the update until a more convenient time like later that night then manually update it.

exactly I see these posts all the time.  People don't head the warnings the first 3 times and then on the 4th it will auto update on its own.

If you're seeing "these posts" all the time, perhaps that's indicative of an issue, rather than people who don't know what's going on.  Sorry to put you out with another "these people" post.

For me specifically, when I get the pop-up to update is usually not a good time, so I delay it.   If I press the notification to continue/start the update (on MY time), it never kicks-off.  This is on multiple Samsung phones, the latest an S10+.

There needs to be an option that customers can choose to disable the forced updates, period.   If AT&T is going to be punitive about it, they can simply lock some other part or have a persistent nag screen until the customer updates it.  Denying access to device or network is, again, a liability issue that's going to bite them in the slacks some day.

That's an issue that needs to be addressed. Putting off the update indefinitely is not.

No it's not. AT&T is just sending the update. It's your decision to keep putting it off until the phone forces the update. That's like saying it's AT&T's fault if the phone dies because you didn't charge it.

last I checked cell phones and service are not a public utility they are still luxury items...

On to the reason they use forced updates.  The bug caught in august caused tons of companies to lock out devices from use with company resources because of the security risks.  I get it you are not happy about how it is done BUT this is how ATT has done it for YEARS since the s3 actually.

To update after you tell it no you have to go into the settings menu and manually tell it to update.

It is actually a liability and a huge one at that because if I bought the same exact phone from Samsung unlocked I would have the ability to prevent the updates instead they're forced upon me at AT&t's convenience When I'm in the middle of driving somewhere in the middle of a work appointment trying to get access to a property and I can't get in because my phone decides it wants to update when it's negative 20°.. I'm absolutely done with AT&T if they cannot fix this issue. Could you imagine if we had the ability to go out to their vehicles and swap around their brake pedal with their gas pedal and move every other control of their vehicle around overnight and then watch them drive to work.. ohhhh That would be glorious

Won't be long before there's a (Edited per community guidelines) (Edited per community guidelines) on AT&T for this.. They are literally disabling people's phone when it's convenient for ATT with no regard for their customers. I have friends with other carriers who have the same phone and they still retain the ability to prevent the updates AT&T has modified the software version for their phone not allowing this.
