Struggling to update LG G3: error 0x1125000, claims phone has been rooted, and cant find new sw

Hi everyone,

I'm using an AT&T LG G3 (LG-D850), which reports running Android 5.0.1 (specifically, software version D85021r).  AT&T have previously announced that upgrading to Marshmallow is officially supported (link).  But I'm struggling to get it to work.

  1. Yesterday I was able to use the About Phone > Software Update options to download an update - about 780Mb.  Following the download, I was prompted to reboot and the upgrade started.
  2. After a few minutes I received a pop-up reporting that the upgrade failed with error 0x1125000. The only option at this point was to exit the upgrade, whereupon the phone rebooted.  When it started back up the phone then reported, "This device is suspected in rooting.  Software update is not available for rooted device".  However, this phone has never been rooted.  It is stock AT&T through and through.
  3. When I go back to the Software Update menu and choose "Update now", the phone reports that the device is up to date (and tells me I need to wait X hours before I can check again).
  4. I see that my cache folder has used 780Mb of storage that it had not used before, so I infer that the download is sitting there, ready to go.  I'd be quite happy to empty it and start over if I could find a way to do so (I can't go into Storage > Apps > Settings or Settings Data and choose "clear data" because the option is grayed out when the app is running, which it is, by definition).

I did wonder if I should try and download the LG Mobile Support tool and attempt an update over a USB connection, but that seems contrary to all the advice I see on this forum about the upgrades working OTA.  Can anyone assist? @ATTKevin, for example, any wise words?

Hi @kjell8956,

I am sorry you are having issues with downloading the software update for your G3. I am elated to offer assistance with this!

I totally understand how important it is to be able to download the update for your phone. The first thing I will suggest is to clear your cache partition. Please follow the directions below to do this on your G3:

From the home screen, tap Apps.

Tap Settings

.
Tap General tab.

Tap Storage.

Tap Cached data, then tap OK.

Wait for the cached data to clear.

When the wipe is complete, the storage screen refreshes and cached data will not be listed.

This means your cached data has been successfully cleared.

Once you have fully cleared the cache, please attempt to update the phone again. Let me know if you have any questions!

Have a fantastic rest of your day!

Thankyou Geovanni for the response.  I tried this last night and was able to successfully clear the cache prior to checking for an update.  The update then downloaded and I triggered the upgrade process.  Unfortunately I hit exactly the same problem as before: error 0x1125000 followed by the spurious claim that the phone might be rooted.  What should I try next?

Hi @kjell8956,

I am sorry you are still having this issue with your phone.  The next step will be to perform a factory reset on your device.  Please visit our Device Support page for some directions on how to perform the reset. First select your make and model of device, then under the Tutorials tab please select Troubleshooting, then Reset device. You can follow the prompts from there to reset your phone.

Hi Geovanni, I'm afraid the reset made no difference.  I still get exactly the same symptoms.

I can share your grief but I don't have a solution. My used (China seller said new) G3 phone shows software update error 0x111004 and suspected of rooting. It was rooted. I unrooted it with Super SU and checked with CCleaner and Root Checker. Root is gone. Did factory reset and still see the error code and the new software will not load. Stuck with Kit-Kat 4.4.2. Wish someone would offer a simple workable solution to FIX the phone and not replace it. It works well in every other way.

I went and spoke to one of the reps at The Other Company (V....n), because I was unhappy with the phone and T's coverage where I live.  She speculated that a phone that was unlocked (e.g. you paid it off and then unlocked from AT&T, but continued to use on AT&T's network), might be incorrectly tagged as rooted.

For now, I'm going to avoid LGs.  Depending on how coverage works out in my area I might eventually bail on AT&T as well.  My most recent experience in their stores buying a new phone for my daughter was excruciating and I'm in no hurry to go back.
