When replying to group texts, identical message is delivered from unknown number
This is consistent and regardless of what messaging app I use on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. When I send a message in group format, two separate messages are sent: one from my number in the original group message, and an identical one from an unknown number with my same area code in another copy of the group message. So MY text is being received by the rest of the group as if from a different number. I've tried calling this number and it appears not to belong to anyone. What is going on???

I certainly want to help you resolve this unusual issue. You may have installed or have two messaging apps active at the same time. This may explain why two messages are being sent. I recommend isolating and identifying which one it may be by uninstalling or disabling one of the apps.
