Xiaomi MI 9 Global No VoLTE or Visual Voicemail

So I bought a Xiaomi MI 9 Global after ensuring it will work with AT&T. Although it does work, including LTE I've clocked in the 100Mb range, I have no voice and data simultaneously, no VoLTE and I cannot get Visual Voicemail to be configured.

A support rep said that the only reason LTE is working is because I activated the SIM on an iPhone but once the system sees it's no longer an iPhone, it won't provision LTE services at all to the MI 9.

They said it's because the IMEI numbers associated with the MI 9 come back as "unknown manufacturer" so it will drop my service to cell calls and 3G only once it realizes I'm not using the iPhone anymore.

Anyone here successfully using an MI 9 on AT&T and getting all services to work?

The only unlocked phone that fully supports advanced feature is the google pixel 3/3xl

You will never get VoLTE with that phone nor will it get wifi calling or advance messaging.

Those are all software features, depends on wheterh your ROM has that feature enabled or not.

I have Mi8, with latest OS update, VoLET enabled for other contries carriers, but not ATT.

for Visual Voicemail, you can download ATT app from app store, i had to contact ATT customer support once, to let them add Mi 8 into there supported list. Mi is famous in India, where the call center is i guess, so they added Mi 8 right away for me, and i can fetch voicemail ever since.

for LTE, i been travelling coast to coast, it's all working fine.

They are AT&T software features, included on all At&t branded phones and the one other phone updated with the software, the pixel 3.

The rep was correct (can’t believe) but spot on.  Your IMEi will most likely show as a 3g phone and not get LTE, but for the iPhone you used first.

Did you contacted them to have your Mi8 added to their supported list??? I tried 3 different stores, contacted them through chat and voice and everybody say the same thing, it will always show as unknown device because is not a phone sold by ATT.

The only thing that they do is registering the phones IMEI as a BYO phone... I have a Pocophone F1 and I cant get LTE anywhere... only 4G icon but with 3G speeds according to Speedtest app. It not even connect to the Nextgen APN ... only to the ATT Phone...

I love this phone, is way better than a lot of flagships... but it doesnt work well in USA.... even supporting most of the bands...

I called AT&T support multiple times and got different answers from every tech I spoke with. One said it would definitely work if the phone gets registered. Another one said no it wouldn't because it's missing the AT&T software that makes those features work. Another one said they don't think I can register it at all. Another one had no idea what I was even talking about. It was quite ridiculous.

In the end I returned the Xiaomi MI 9 Global (purchased on Amazon) and got hit with an unreal restock fee of $115 from the seller and since I did the return via Amazon, they made me put the hazard materials stickers on it because of the battery (even though it didn't ship to me with any hazardous materials stickers). It cost me $69 to send it back. I got jacked all the way around and will never buy another "global" (or even non-carrier branded) phone again.

I bought an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S10+ and it's fantastic.

Lesson learned.

The Pocophone F1 has no LTE bands for At&t.  Only 3g, which on At&t is 3.5G.  It has no LTE bands for T-mobile either.
