AppleCare refund? Did you know if your iPhone 6s still had time on AppleCare you can get a refund?
Did you trade in your iPhone 6s to get an iPhone 7 but still had time on your AppleCare left?

If you contact Apple you can get a refund, see the details at https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202704
It took a while in that I spend a lot of time on hold (26 minutes before my first human) but once they transferred me it was only a few minutes. They can send it back to your charge card if you got it from Apple, Apple credit (not iTunes, but store), or they can mail you a check (I think you have to ask for this).
They'll want your iPhone IMEI number, which should be on your AppleCare receipt (FYI, mine labled the IMEI as serial number).
AppleCare is just over $5 a month, so every month is an extra $5 back.
This would apply to an iPhone 6 too, if you had any time in your AppleCare plan left. But if you bought it right when it first came out, your time would likely be up by now.

I believe that if you replace an iPhne with another iPhone, you can also transfer the remaining AppleCare+ from the old phone to the replacement as well. This happens automatically if you go to an Apple Store and get a replacement for one that is under AppleCare+.
The other thing to remember is that if you get an iPhone replaced by Apple, and your old phone's AppleCare+ expires in less than 90 days (or has already expired), Apple will extend that AppleCare+ to 90 days on the replacement phone so that you are guaranteed to have at least 90 days coverage on all replacement phones.

When you say "replace" you mean they hand you a free AppleCare replacement, right? (Not purchase a replacement?)
Yeah, this has always transferred automatically for me when they gave me an AppleCare replacement.

Actually, I have seen at least 1 case where Apple allowed it to be transferred rather than refunded, but in that case, the replacement AppleCare+ was for almost a year and the person purchased a refurbished newer model so they transferred the AppleCare+ from their old phone to the newly purchased refurbished replacement.

The example I saw was a few years ago when someone had an iPhone 4s and it was an "out of warranty repair" so it would have cost them quite a bit for the replacement 4s. Instead they bought a refurbished iPhone 5 from the Apple Store and transferred the remaining AppleCare from the damaged 4s to the replacement refurbished iPhone5.
I was posting here more for people who get an iPhone replaced by Assurion under an insurance claim. If Apple replaces an iPhone, they automatically transfer the remaining AppleCare from the old phone to the replacement, but if a phone is replaced by Assurion (or Best Buy, or...) Apple does not transfer the remaining warranty automatically, and the replacement would only have a 90 day warranty on the refurbished device. The customers can make an appointment at an Apple Genius Bar and take the documentation with them to get the AppleCare transferred to the replacement phone. This is most important for people with an insurance claim on a phone less than 9 months old. The reason for the Genius Bar appointment is that the Apple techs must perform an inspection on the "new" device to make sure it is not already damaged, as to verify that it is within the correct time frame (I beleive it is 2-4 weeks, but not sure of the exact limit).

I didn't relize Apple officially did refurb iPhones for sale (was where the question came from).
