Exchange (Google) mail not syncing with iOS 8 on iPhone 6

I just got the new iPhone 6.  I restored it from a working backup I made of my iPhone 5.  My Google Mail (Exchange) including contacts will only sync for a few hours then will not sync at all. I then lose all my emails and contacts that are from my Google account.

I did restore from that backup a few hours later and it restored, but again after a few hours it would not stay synced and I lose all my contacts and emails again. I read on Apple.com communities (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6543444) to shut the phone off and disccount and reconnect to the WiFi which I have done to no avail.

Please let me know if you have had any issue and any resolve. Thank you.

I was under the impression that Google discontinued the Exchange mode for their servers.  They would allow you to continue to use it for devices which were alredy configured, but they would not allow new devices.  Your restoring form your old iPhone backup would make Google think that it was still the old phone for a little while, but once it realized it was a new device, it stops working.  I don't believe that there is any permanent solution, other than talkign to Google, or switching away from Exchange mode...

My iPhone 5 has Exchange mode configured for my GMail, and it still works, but my iPhone 6 prompts me for my password every time I try to do anything.  To the best of my knowledge, this is because my new device is not supported by Google...

That makes no sense, why would Google end it's Exchange service? Not I have to download another app (Gmail) to get my emails? Everything was in one place and now I have to make an extra step to get my emails (reply, forward, etc.) via their app? That's really does not make any sense to me.

I see that my contacts via the Exchange are syncing and are correct. Why would they remove the email side it was working with out incident since iPhone 4.

I read in another post to just setup the Google (Exchange) mail account as a normal "Gmail" account. Which I did and it seems to be working properly. I see all my mail and well as the contacts have been pushed over as well to a new "Address Book" under "Groups" in contacts.

You don't have to use the Google app to get your GMail.  You can use the iOS Mail app, you just can't set it up as an Exchange server account.  This means that you lose the push notifications and you have to use the "fetch" services to get your email notifications.  I believe that Google did this to try to encourage you to use their app, where they can push more advertising to you, and control your experience more.  I personally don't have any emails coming through Google that are so critical that they can't wait an hour for my hourly fetch cycle in my iOS Mail app...

More than likely because Exchange, specifically, is a Microsoft product and directly competes with "Google Apps". Each time a gmail account used Exchange or ActiveSync, it cost Google money in the form of a license fee.

Competition + Costs = likely reason it was turned off.
