Upgrade / iCloud restore sans reset option?
Hello,
I'm hoping there may be a knowledgeable fellow iPhone user that would be able to help me with my recent upgrade.
My upgrade was from an iPhone3 (3G) to an iPhone6 (4G).
When I recieved the iPhone6, it was not activated (no cellular network), but I connected it to the internet via WiFi and it seemed to update several things on the phone automatically, without input from me, including the following:
1) photo albums and photos were added from my iPad 2017,
2) contacts were added from my iPhone3
I am specifically interested in restoring SMS messages from the iPhone3, but without doing a reset & restore from iCloud on the iPhone6 -- I don't want to lose the contact information and photos that had already been automatically transferrred when I connected the phone via WiFi.
My iPhone6 is now activated, and the iPhone3 is deactivated. Before going into a local AT&T store to activate the iPhone6, I did a backup (to the iCloud) of the data associated with the iPhone3, so I am hoping that I can eventually get the iPhone6 in the same state (with all SMS and voicemail history) as the iPhone3 prior to switching.
Thank you in advance for any helpful suggestions on how to accomplish this without resetting my iPhone6!

Your 1) and 2) happened because of your Apple ID. As soon as you signed into your new iPhone with your Apple ID, contacts and photo albums were automatically synched. The only way to get your new iPhone in the same state as your old iPhone is to use that iPhone 3 backup to restore to the iPhone 6. That will transfer your messages and you won’t lose any contacts or photos previously synched. I’m not totally sure but I believe that will also transfer any saved voicemail messages. Don’t worry, I’ve used that method to move from iPhone 3 to 4 to 5 to 6s. It works. Better yet would be to back up the iPhone 3 to a computer with iTunes, then use that backup and iTunes to do the restore. Anything that was synched to iTunes will also transfer.

Unfortunately, although this course of action seemed to be sound, the problem was not resolved.
After contacting Apple support, they claim that AT&T, i.e. the service provider, provides the storage (and presumably recovery of voicemail data), and that Apple only provides a means of accessing it.
When I press and hold 1 (as instructed by the recording presented by dialling 611) the first prompt in the tree is:
1) Mailbox number please -- please enter the mailbox number specified by your system manager.
If I enter my cellular number, the system responds 'Sorry you are having trouble, goodbye.'
I'd also spoken to an AT&T representative who could not give me the voicemail mailbox number unless I could first provide the mailbox passcode; since I have neither the voicemail mailbox number nor the mailbox passcode, I hung up.
I'm open to any other possible suggestions to recover my voicemail history (as well as my SMS history).

The backup/restore method will get your messaging history and it should also restore your voicemails provided they were stored on the phone. Did you have visual voicemail enabled on the old phone? It is also possible your issue is an iOS issue. I’m sure your iPhone 3 is running an outdated version. Your voice mailbox number is your phone number. Your passcode is something you set and it can be reset if you have forgotten it.
