upgrade phone question

will keep this as brief as possible...

want to change a phone that is currently under an AT&T family plan. it is an old, OLD Apple iPhone 4s AT&T (MC918LL/A)

is it as simple as just moving my SIM card from old to new one?

where to go to get an unlocked phone that is COMPLETELY compatible to ALL AT&T phone service plans, etc.

i've read where some problems that can occur...

"The lack of native MMS is a common complaint. "

"...instead of full 4G services I only get 3G at best; my main complaint is that multimedia messages won't send and receive unless you use another Messanger service such as Facebook Messanger. "

all i want is basically, a phone that functions 100% after SIM card is installed.  like changing a light bulb.

thanx in advance.

1.  No your old sim is a 3g, micro sim.  Almost all new phones use a nano sim.

2.  The only unlocked entirely compatible phones are iPhones 6 and newer.  Google Pixel 3 is very close, even gets WiFi calling on postpaid.   To get an iPhone that is unlocked it must be a Verizon phone or Sim free model purchased from Apple.  Other retail iPhones are subject to US Flex activation policy.
