I tried to install a wifi extender. All went well until I needed to find where to place it.

When I went from spot to spot in my house to find a good place for the extender, I kept having to move closer and closer to the gateway until it became ridiculous to use an extender - even 10' from the gateway was not good enough.

You might have to consider adding a mesh WiFi system and using that router and satellite(s) to extend your WiFi coverage. Are you using AT&T's WiFi extenders? They aren't very good.

A Wi-Fi extender does need to be where it can get adequate signal in order to communicate with the base router.  Ten feet does sound ridiculously short.  I would concur that AT&T's extender solution is overpriced and under-effective.  Take $250 (which is what you'll spend with AT&T in a couple of years) and buy a mesh system.
