Question about AT&T support callback: was it legitimate?

I had called AT&T last week about a problem with an incorrect email address ending in prodigy.net that showed up in my inbox. I called on 3/9, and the woman told me she would call back on Monday. Since the issue was identified as a glitch, I wasn't that concerned about getting a callback.

Let me add that I have had numerous phishing emails lately, so I am becoming paranoid. Today, I received a call on my cell from xxxxxxxxxx. I ignored the unrecognized number; then the caller left a voicemail saying she was from AT&T. Since prodigy.net glitch has disappeared, I only called back from politeness. I went into my saga about the xxxxxxxxxxxxx, my numerous spam emails, the Amazon attack. Then she asked me for my account number.

When I called AT&T last Thursday, I had to prove my identity to them with a pin, etc.  Suddenly--and perhaps illogically--I felt uncertain whether this caller truly was from AT&T.  I abruptly terminated the conversation, but now I wonder if it was legitimate. I would dearly love to have an email where I could articulate my concerns to AT&T. Meanwhile, I don't know who to trust.  [edited for privacy – please do not post personal information]

If you Google the number in question, it is ATT looking for feedback.  That being said, I would never give my account number to anyone if I was unsure of who I was talking to.

Thanks for your prompt answer! Guess I owe AT&T an apology for this one: after a virus in mid-February (caught by my virus protection but not sure if any damage was done), the Amazon hack, and unauthorized activity on my email application in Russia, Ukraine, Algeria, and Brazil within the past few weeks, I have become paranoid.

Yes, my husband confirms that the number--now removed from my original post--was legitimate. I was spooked because I had given our home phone as the callback number. When I got a call on my cell, I was suspicious, since my cell is not listed in my AT&T profile (our cells are with a different company because of coverage reasons). I've gotten at least two other bogus calls on my cell today (automated "There's no problem with your credit card, but," a wrong number, and another mystery number). Turns out, the AT&T lady had my husband's cell number, and he gave her mine!

When I called AT&T last week, quite properly I had to answer a few questions. How are we to know when a caller is legit and when not?

I don't answer any number I don't recognize, house phone or cell.  If they want to talk bad enough they'll leave a message.  If they don't leave a message, it must not have been important.  *shrug*
