Does *77 work for cell phones?

I have been receiving harrassing calls from Private Numbers since October. The calls just became threatening.  I will be informing local police.  I have been in contact with AT&T and was transferred to the fraud department who did absolutely nothing to help with the situation.  Apparently harrassing callers have more rights than I do and no one will do anything to help.  Hopefully, the police feel differently.

I have blocked private numbers on my phone, but they still go to voice mail and leave horrible messages.  *77 apparently rejects anonymous calls, but it doesn't appear that it works for cell phones.  I've been trying to research this online and find some conflicting information.  I would appreciate clarification on this matter.  Apparently I can download a security app on my phone that might help, but was informed by AT&T that I can then only receive calls from people on my contact list.  This doesn't really sound right, but it's what I was told.

Please note that I want these voice mails to stop.  I want to reject the anonymous call.  I've already blocked anonymous calls but they can still leave harrassing voice mails.  There is something incredibly wrong with this system.

Does anyone have any information that might help?

*77 only works for landlines.

Does *77 stop spam calls on your cell phone?

A lot of people have pressed *77 from their cell phones thinking that it can stop unwanted calls, but that’s not the case.

Pressing *77 won’t stop anonymous calls on your cell phone. In fact, in some areas of the United States, pressing *77 on your mobile phone will connect you to either the police or public safety officials.

The fraud department is for fraudulent purchases or activity on your AT&T account. It has absolutely nothing to do with spam or harassing messages.

If you are being harassed by someone, that is a police matter. Take it up with them please.

The only way to block a number from leaving a voicemail is to use an application like robocaller that you can mark the number calling you as spam. This will not only block it from your phone but it will start being blocked from everybody's phone 😉

AT&T actually transferred me to their fraud department - so I would have had no way of knowing that it was the incorrect department for harrassment.  Figured if the company transferred me to their fraud department, there was a reason.  Guess not.

As I already said, I will be going to the police.  It's in my original post.

The call is from Private Number or Unkown Number.  I can't block that as spam.  I have already blocked Private Number calls, but they go directly to voicemail, where the caller proceeds to leave a threatening message.

My thought was that if I could reject anonymous calls, they wouldn't be able to leave a voicemail.  That is the outcome I am looking for.

Don't erase those messages The police need to hear them. I believe they can subpoena records which will allow them to get around the caller ID block. Or perhaps you know exactly who it is who's making the threats

If this is a domestic situation and you are in danger, you do have the right to ask for a new phone number without paying the fee.

In fact if you have an order of protection against a significant other who shares your cellular account, you can even have your account split off without their input for your own safety

Thanks for this.  I honestly have no idea who is doing this.  There are times I think it has to be someone I know (because it has been going on so long) but then I also think it's got to be from outside of the country because sometimes it will happen at three o'clock in the morning.   I have not erased anything.  I am concerned that the police will not do anything and this will go on forever.  Changing my phone number is a last resort - notifying everyone I would need to of a new number would really be alot to take care of.  If I have to, I will.  But honestly would rather not.

If I downloaded something like TrapCall, I'm under the impression it can unmask the number.  And I suppose then I could give the actual number to the police.  I don't know if blocking the actual number would prevent voicemails if they are coming in as private.    Has anyone done this?

I filled out the form.  Spoke to the police and will file a harrassment report.  But the police told me specifically to discuss this with my phone carrier (talking to you JamesR, Community Forums Specialist).  She said you should have a specific department that I can discuss the details of these calls with.  Not a form.  A person who would get the details from me.  She said that, in contradiction to what I have been told thus far by AT&T, you DO have the information regarding Private Numbers and I should be talking to you.    Can someone tell me who to speak to and give me an actual phone number?  I honestly feel like I have been getting such a run around from you.  I need a name and a number.  Can someone help me out with that?

There was no "best option" to get the help I need.  I ended up in Landline help regarding *57.  Wasn't even for cell phones.  So I filled out yet another form.  I need to speak with an actual person.  This isn't "support".

Thanks, but I have already done this.  Those calls still go to voice mail.  I'm getting disgusting and threatening voice mails.

I am going to down load TrueCaller or TrapCall and see if this helps.
