iphone voicemail notification not showing

When I first got my iPhone 6, I got the red dot on the phone app icon whenever I had a voicemail message.  But about 2 months ago, this stopped working, and since then, I have only been able to determine whether I have voicemail by calling the voicemail number, which is VERY inconvenient.  Since I have get 200MB/month of data (grandfathered plan), I do not normally have cellular data turned on; I mostly just have WiFi turned on unless I need the cellular data, so I do not rely on visual voicemail.  This worked for me for many years with my iPhone 4 and worked on the iPhone 6 until about 2 months ago.

I have contacted AT&T both over the phone and in person in the store, and they have tried resetting my voicemail account and resetting all network settings on my phone, but the problem still exists.  Does anyone have any idea on how to fix this?  Thanks!

Hi all,

We did some research and piled together solutions posted by Apple Visual Voicemail user. We hope this helps!

Troubleshooting Tips:

  • Data Settings - You do need to have your data turned on for your device to properly receive voicemail notifications. You can verify data is turned on by going to Settings > Cellular > Toggle cellular data “On”.
  • Reset Your Visual Voicemail password.
  • Restart the device.
  • Check if there is a carrier setting update required, install it by going into Settings, then tapping General and then tapping about.

Also, We found a few solutions searching Apple's forums. Below are a few other steps you can also try to resolve this issue.

  • Call your phone, leave voicemail it will pop up.
  • Enable/Disable Airplane mode.
  • Reset Network Settings - Note: You will have to reenter your WiFi and Bluetooth information afterward
  • Go to Settings> Siri & Search >turn on "Press Home for Siri". Then do a reset (hold home button and on/off button at the same time for 10 seconds).

Note: If the voicemail's were left before the app was set up on your new phone, they may not up right away. Double-check your voicemail was set up correctly on your phone. We have a fantastic online article which goes over how to set up visual voicemail.

We also have our handy Troubleshoot & Resolve tool! It’s a great way to diagnose possible issues with your device and get them fixed. Once you arrive on the page, please choose your device’s make and model, and then click on Voicemail to begin personalized troubleshooting just for you! Man Very Happy

I hope this helps! If you have any other questions, feel free to let us know. Have a great rest of your week.

I know this thread is old, but I was having issues with my voicemail alerts as well. ATT reset my password and i had follow the steps to reset the settings. The fix that worked for me is, I went into my voicemail and turned off pasword request when calling voicemail. Now if I call the voicemail by pressing and holding "1", it will give me my voicemails. Before, it would prompt me to enter my password. Hopefully this helps other people. After an hour or so, all the previous voicemails i had showed up in my voicemail app.

As far as I know voice calls and text messages require mobile data.
If you turn on mobile data do call notifications come in?

lizdance40:  Sometimes yes, sometimes no.  The last few times, the voicemail notification did NOT appear when I turned on the cellular data, but it appeared when I turned OFF the cellular data!

In any case, my voicemail notification worked fine without cellular data being on for several years when I was using my iPhone 4, and it worked fine when I first got my iPhone 6.  The problem developed sometime after I had been using the iPhone 6 for maybe a couple of months.

My wife and I had some problems with the voicemail losing the password and had to reset the password. Both my wife and I have the 6's and we both had password problems.

Can you access the voicemail area of the iPhone? When we tried to access the voicemails, it required the inputting of the password.

I have no problems with the voicemail password or with my account.  The only problem I have is that my iPhone gives me no sign when I have a voicemail message.  Everything else about the voicemail is working exactly as it should.

Hey there @Lancerevo08

I’d be happy to help with your call issues! Please try backing up the device and then performing a factory reset by following these steps:

To back up the device, I recommend using Samsung Kies 3 which allows you to backup everything in moments. See here for a step-by-step guide in backing up and restoring your device. Once backed up, you would perform a factory reset by heading to Settings>Backup & Reset>Factory Data Reset then tap Reset Device and Delete All.

After the device has been reset, try a test call to see if the same thing happens before restoring. If the issues continue, it may require a device replacement.

Please send us a PM here with the following if the issue remains unsolved:

  • Cell and/or account number
  • Full name
  • Cell number affected
  • IMEI of iPhone (Settings>General>About)
  • Email address

If this helps, please mark this answer as an accepted solution!

Thanks,

Charise

Charise,

I think you're posting in the wrong thread.  No one called Lancerevo08 has posted here, and the questions in this forum are about voicemail notification on an iPhone 6, not a Samsung phone.

Did you find a fix for this issue? My wife and I are having the same issue. We received our new phones a month ago and just noticed yesterday that we had a bunch of voicemails and the phones are not showing notifications.

No; I am still having this problem.  It just happened again yesterday.  I had my cellular data turned on briefly in the evening when I was at a store and needed Internet access and had no Wi-Fi.  I turned it off when I was done.  No voicemail indication was present.  Then when I went to bed, I put the phone into airplane mode, and the VM indicator came on.  So I turned the phone back on and called VM, and found a message that had been left early in the day.  So the VM indicator should have been on a long time ago, but it didn't appear until I put the phone into airplane mode.
