spam calls, more than half a dozen a day

Can someone from ATT explain why all of a sudden I started getting spam calls after switching from Tmobile to ATT??? I'm ridiculously getting a high number of calls the very next day after switching, definitely something to do with ATT. Should I ask for a full refund and switch back to the previous carrier????

Hello @devip15, we understand how frustrating Spam calls can be. We're happy to provide some options to help with your concerns.

AT&T ActiveArmor works 24/7 to help stop threats before they get to you. Unwanted calls and texts are annoying, and some could be fraudulent or illegal. Report offenders that slip through and help block them!

  • Forward suspicious messages to 7726 (SPAM).
  • Complete the form to help block spam, robocalls, and unwanted text messages.
  • Download AT&T Call Protect on your phone to manage future unwanted callers.

AT&T automatically blocks fraud calls in the network before they ring on your phone or fill your voicemail. No action is required to benefit from this security feature.

  • To block your spam calls, you will need to download the free AT&T ActiveArmor mobile security app to set up your network call preferences, customize your robocall protection and create a personal block list. Additionally, you can secure your device and personal data plus receive data breach alerts within the app – all at no extra cost to you.

Fraudsters are continuously finding new ways to threaten customer data and device security. As a result, 100% prevention is the goal, but not guaranteed. We are dedicated to continually evolving and improving our security efforts to help protect you. Your feedback is important, feel free reach back out to us if you have any questions.

Ok, I would be happy to fill out the form, but my question is if other carries have likely 0 spam called (I was using them for more than a year) then why would ATT have so many spam calls? Why as a customer we have to go through all these? as a giant corporation and since I pay double the bill compared to my previous carrier I am thinking would make sense to continue using ATT.

AT&T has no idea.  Spammers get phone numbers from all over the place.  Sometimes they just send to blocks of random numbers.  Sometimes they wake up and decide to send out a bunch of spam all at once, and then go back to sleep or whatever else they do.  Reporting the source number is likely useless, since those are almost certainly spoofed, and the next spam will come from a different spoofed number.  To be honest, I doubt other carriers are any better at stopping spam calls, since it’s number based, not carrier based.

You aren’t going to get a refund, unless you cancel service and return your phone within the 14 day window.  What would be the basis for refund anyway?  I haven’t heard that AT&T, or any carrier, has a 100% money back guarantee if you get spam calls or texts.

Hello @devip15, we hear you, and want to answer you.

Since you switched from T-Mobile to AT&T, there is always a high flow of random spam calls.
If you are using AT&T ActiveArmor then it helps you to stop threats and actually helps to block spam calls.
Additionally, you can secure your device and personal data plus receive data breach alerts within the app – all at no extra cost to you.

100% prevention is the goal, but not guaranteed. We are dedicated to continually evolving and improving our security efforts to help protect you.
Do let us know if you require any further assitance? We'd love to look into it and try to resolve it as soon as possible.

Thank you for contacting AT&T Community Forums.

I'm certain it is carrier-based the same phone has been in use for several years 0 spam calls until switched from another carrier to ATT, The very next day spam calls started, no kidding they are just flooded, what would you call that? If you are not an ATT employee or affiliate then I would prefer them to reply and decide on that next. In reality the phone number because garbage the next day of switching which is not usual. Also, just google it and see how many complaints about spam calls on ATT, I could have searched before switching

We understand how difficult that can be, and this is not the experience we want you to have @devip15.

We are going to reach out to you in DM to take a look at account details and help you with active armor information. Please look out for a DM notification from us. (for your reference it is the bell icon on the top right-hand corner of the forums)

Looking forward to speaking with you!

I do agree that there seems to be a carrier specific reason even if the carriers themselves don’t know or do know and don’t say. I’m not that fussed about it because I have accepted that there will always be spam calls but there is a noticeable increase in volume of spam calls when switching to att that doesn’t seem to exist on other carrier. Maybe the other carriers have a better database of numbers they block before it gets to their customers. The phone number I currently have was given to me back in 2016 and started as an att number. I had received more spam calls then than I did after switching to xfinity mobile in 2020 then to T-Mobile in 2022. Same number, but some how less spam calls. Which if the number of calls you get is totally dependent on how leaked your number is to scammers, there shouldn’t be a noticeable decrease just by switching carriers with the same number, because it’s the same number. I’ve switched back to att this September of 2023, and the amount of spam calls I have received has skyrocketed from one or two calls a week to at least 4 random calls a day to up to 10 calls in one day. That’s huge compared to before where most days I didn’t receive a call at all. I am using active armor so that day I received 10 calls, only two actually got through and rang my phone. But I didn’t need any additional app protection on my previous carriers. Perhaps the other carriers just have better security in network vs added it to the phone via an app. At the end of the day it’s not a total deal breaker because my phone is mostly on do not disturb anyways and the active armor blocks most calls, but I did want add some validity to your theory that there is a carrier specific situation going on here.

I would like to add that my experience with the active armor has been, interesting. It has a harder time blocking local numbers. I never get a voicemail from these numbers so I can’t tell if they are total fraud spam or more like local political or nonprofit calls which is why those numbers aren’t flagged for fraud. Additionally, this is something i’ve seen before and i’ve only seen using att, but sometimes the phone number calling gets divided up wrong? Idk if the scammers have control of how their caller id looks as a way to avoid spam blocker. For example the day I got 10 calls, 5 of them were from the same number immediately in a row. 4 were blocked, but the last one came through because my phone showed it as a Switzerland number. The number with area code, instead of being divided up like (413) ###-####, got divided up like +41 3# ### ## #. But when you looked at the digits, it was the same exact number combination just divided up differently.

It appears at&t disabled the block feature on my samsung s10e (which was a 1 step block) and wants me to use active armor.  active  armor is cumbersome. When it's on it's difficult to use, you can't turn it off,but it will turn off randomly by itself and drains the battery when it is on.  On top of it you want me to buy an enhanced version (not gonna happen).

I agree! Same situation here. I had Tmobile for over 9 years and no spam calls! Immediately after switching to att I get daily spam calls!  And I don’t want to hear about the active armor app! Why do I have to download another app to not be pestered by spammers on att’s network?!
