Unable to send text when connected to ATT wifi

Can send imessages, but not texts. We're on our home wifi and connected. It says "AT&T Wifi" at the top. But texts consistently fail to all phone numbers.

Thank you for getting back to us, ! Let's share some helpful suggestions for your messages and voicemail!

HD Voice technology delivers crisp, clear calls with less background noise and simultaneous voice and data at 4G LTE speeds over AT&T's 4G LTE network where HD Voice has deployed. Coupled with HD Voice-capable devices, customers experience crystal clear conversations.

Make sure you have the latest software version. iPhone 7 and above: Go to Settings, then General, and lastly Software update. Select Download and install to update to the most current software version.

Reset your network settings to refresh your connection. Resetting the network restores the default settings on the device. Be aware, Bluetooth pairing and Wi-Fi settings are deleted and will need to be re-added. You will not lose data like pictures, videos, or text. From your iPhone: Go to Settings>General>Reset>Reset network settings.

As our ACE mentioned, turn off and turn back on the Wi-Fi Calling feature as a refresher. Do the same to your internet router. Try turning off your cellular data while using Wi-Fi Calling. Power cycle your phone off and on as well.

You may be in a weak or uncovered area when experiencing challenges with your voicemail. Visual Voicemail messages download to your smartphone over a wireless cellular data connection. Check to see if your area has towers or coverage in your area.

Lastly, you may need a SIM replacement to improve both the Wi-Fi Calling and voicemail feature. You can purchase one at your nearest AT&T Store.

We hope this helps improve your wireless experience. If it does not, check our our Mobility Troubleshooting hub for more information!

Come back and let us know if these tips were helpful!

Not much you can do about that. You can try refreshing the “AT&T WiFi” connection by turning WiFi off for a few seconds, then back on and wait for until “AT&T WiFi” displays again. If you get any cellular signal at all, you can try turning of WiFi calling or try sending with WiFi off.

We have no cell service here. And they discontinued the microcell service we had been using, telling us we had to use wifi. We used to be able to send texts, until 3G went away, but since our phones are 5G I don't see why that should have an effect. Help me understand why we can't send texts on wifi, please.

Hello @Estesthebestest, we want to help and look further into why you're unable to send text through Wi-Fi.

Please be advised, most Apple and Android smartphones sold by AT&T since 2015 support Wi-Fi Calling. Feel free to review a list of Wi-Fi capable devices.

To work, Wi-Fi Calling must be on and you must be connected to a Wi-Fi internet network. Next, an AT&T Wireless or AT&T PREPAID account set up for HD Voice.

Also, each device must be removed from the MicroCell approved-user list to use Wi-Fi Calling. If no other devices use the MicroCell, you can unplug it. If you used your Wi-Fi Calling-capable device to register to the MicroCell, and other devices will continue to use the MicroCell, you must re-register it using one of those devices.

Feel free to reach back out and provide us with device make and model types to provide you with more personalized device support.

We look forward to helping and thanks for reaching out to the AT&T Community!

Thank you, Lynn!

My husband and I both have iPhone 8s. Our home network is connected to broadband. Our Microcell has been unplugged ever since AT&T informed us they were discontinuing our service a few years ago (I think. The pandemic has definitely impacted my sense of time!)

I do not know what HD voice is! However, we have been able to send texts in the past. It's just recently, very recently, that the ability to send texts went away. Last night, a three-word text I was trying to send in reply to a text I had received finally went thru after several hours. iMessages have always worked, and still do.

Our AT&T voicemail is also a concern. Sometimes it is days before we get a message someone has sent us, unless we drive into town - then they come through. That's been a problem for awhile. Again, I don't understand why some parts of our wireless connection seem to work and others don't. It would be wonderful if you could give me some troubleshooting tips!

Thank you again for responding to my questions!

I have had issues sending texts over AT&T Wi-Fi calling to non-IMessage phone numbers for the past five years!   I currently have a brand new iPhone 14, have cycled Wi-Fi Calling off and on, turned cellular calling off, restarted my router and still no luck.  It does work occasionally and seemingly at random for no known reason.

I live in an area without any cell coverage (which is a joke in and of itself).

What is AT&T doing to fix this issue????  Are there router settings that can help with this issue?

@mrick39 Nothing because there is no system wide issue, whatever your issue is almost certainly unique to you and possibly your internet provider. We have iPhones too and are on WiFi calling all the time when at home and have no issue sending or receiving texts over WiFi calling.

Are there router settings that can help with this issue?

Not that I know of.
