Prepaid customer upgrading from a phone with a physical SIM card to one that only accepts ESIM

I have a prepaid account for my child and recently upgraded the phone from an iphone XR to an iphone 14 (unlocked). The iphone 14 does not have a physical SIM card, it uses ESIM. How do I change the account over to the new phone without having to get a new phone number?

Yep.  I went from an iPhone 13 with a physical SIM to a 15 with an eSIM, and the eSIM was downloaded and activated during the QuickStart transfer process.  No need to contact AT&T.

call customer care to change your SIM and changing your SIM or phones doesn't change your number.

Apples covers this in it's quick start directions.  Your sim is transfered when you transfer your data.

Hello @tmcaneney,

We're here to help you convert your physical SIM to eSIM.

You can convert your physical SIM to an eSIM following these instructions:

  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Cellular.
  3. Select Add Cellular Plan.
  4. Select Convert to eSIM.
    • Convert to eSIM screen appears advising their plan is associated to a physical SIM that can be converted to an eSIM.
  5. Select Convert Cellular Plan.
    • Convert eSIM message displays advising customer once SIM is converted to eSIM it can be removed from the SIM tray.
  6. Select Convert to eSIM.
    • Cellular settings screen appears, the phone number (cellular plan/eSIM) displays in the Cellular Plans section with “Request Sent” indicator.
    • The screen refreshes and the “Request Sent” indicator changes to “Activating”.
    • Once activation completes the “Activating” indicator disappears.
      • The physical SIM will be listed in the Cellular Plans section with “Converted to eSIM” indicator.
  7. Complete test call to confirm service is working.
  8. Discard physical SIM in old iPhone (it is no longer active).

If your still facing issues, please do contact us and we'll get this taken care off.
