Data Reception at MCAS Cherry Point

NOTE: I am posting this here due to the advice of others who are familiar with these forums. I also include my reply to them because it has more information as well.

First, I have been a user of ATT for 10+ years and I honestly have never needed a reason to switch. I served 5 years in the Marines and am now a empoyee at MCAS Cherry Point. Ever since I have been here, data reception has been abysmal. I have recently even tried other carriers to see if I could get a better signal, but that was unsuccessful as well.

What I want to know is this: What are you trying to do to improve the reception on the base for those who are active duty, DoD, contractors, and dependents?

I can barely get a connection and when I do have one, it's extrememly slow making me the proud owner of a Note 4 that isn't being used optimally because I do use it for work purposes as well.

Since this is an air station I'm sure there's signals and jammers everywhere, but I don't really know what's going on. And since I only live a few minutes off base and my data speeds are quite good, it's probably something going on with the base. But I don't need it at home when I have WI-FI lol. I don't think it's every carrier either interestingly enough. I've only switched to Sprint and Verizon and service was non-existent really. I have heard from people who have U.S. Cellular that they have great data reception. I might add that, my cell service as far as making calls is just fine, it's the data connection that suffers. T-Mobile doesn't even have 3G in this area yet.

The ATT reps locally have told me that they have a special contract with the base that allows their signal to be stronger than the others. With that said, just because it's there doesn't mean squat if it's useless. And of course as with most carriers, it depends on where you are on base as well. Some places are a little better than others, but I've found for the most part service is just really bad.

I used to be a switch technician so I know that the base telecommunications station will have nothing to do with any of the cell carriers. I'll also move this to the other forum you guys suggested. It's just really frustrating at times. I posted hoping that someone from ATT would be like, "oh yeah we're working on getting you guys a great signal. You know, like the commercials on TV say we do." Worth a shot right? 🙂

Hello! @Persilver  thanks for posting your coverage concerns and thanks for your service to our country!

Sorry to hear you’re having connectivity problems, I know how important having service is.  At this time we do not have any scheduled plans to upgrade or add additional towers to the Cherry Point Air Station area. I do see that there may be low or slow connectivity areas according to our service maps there. Our ability to get service to certain locations depends largely on the environment and our access to land to place cell towers. We do have an app that you can install on your phone called the AT&T Mark the Spot app. It allows you to send valuable information to our network planning team in those low spots for possible future upgrades and tower installations.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for your reply. I would hope that the men and women who serve our
country would be higher on the priority list, but it's probably not
profitable since it's such a small percentage of the population. It is nice
that you replied, but honestly, we all know nothing will happen anytime
soon. Thanks again for your input.
