Downtown Dunedin cell coverage is horrible. Isn't a lack of cell coverage an issue for emergencies?

The downtown of Dunedin, Fl 34698. Main Street has basically no coverage in a 5 block area containing downtown proper. There are numerous restaurants, stores, bars, and parks there that anyone with AT&T can not get cell coverage. This has been an issue for years. 2011 they said they were upgrading cell coverage in the area, but not downtown? For us most recently we separated from our parents and could not contact them for over an hour until both phones were in an area with service.  In this day and age that shouldn't happen in a well-populated area. You couldn't make an emergency call if you needed to.  You can use the internet while downtown on your cell. How long do we have to wait for this coverage AT&T?    We are forming a community forum to address this issue in Dunedin. I hope to gain some answers and learn who we need to talk to in order make this happen.

Hello @CJBinFlorida,

I see your device will not obtain coverage in downtown Dunedin, FL.  This is a big concern for sure, but we are able to help you out!  I’m glad you reached out to us here in the AT&T Community Forums!

From reviewing Dunedin’s coverage, I do verify this location is considered as best coverage.  I do recognize there are two local towers which are down in this area currently in which they show a planned restoral time for tomorrow 7/11/2017 by 7:22 MDT.  I do understand this does not explain since 2011 as you mentioned.

Coverage can be affected by tall buildings, construction, many trees, valleys, and congested towers due to population growth.  For a downtown location, tall buildings, possible construction, and network congestion may be common and contribute to the cause.

Please review this article for AT&T Mark the Spot which is an app you and your friends can use in order to send feedback for any network related issues to our network operations team!  This will help out to inform us of customer’s concerns with the network availability in their area.

There is another great feature for you to look into which is Wi-Fi calling.  You are able to have 5 bar quality service whenever connected to a local Wi-Fi!  You can review this article for further details on it!

I hope these steps satisfy your concern with the network in downtown Dunedin!  Please feel free to contact us back if any further assistance is needed.  I’m glad to have had an opportunity to help you!

Thank you for getting back to me! How long have the 2 towers been down??

The service issue isn't just me by a long shot, I have posted the question
on cell service downtown and over 100 people responded with the same
issues; at the bottom of this email are just a couple responses in colored
text. We are proactively talking about a petition/letter of some sort with
signatures to show there is a lack of service in that area and to see if
AT&T would like to use this as a good story to help fulfill the needs of
the people by providing something to bring in better service to downtown. I
know some of the business owners are having the same issues as well and a
couple has opened up their wifi for customers use. The affected area
doesn't have tall buildings over 2 1/2 stories, there are some trees
though. Your coverage map online is somewhat accurate but doesn't show
the real picture. Also, we are about to see a burst in new housing/condo's
in that affected area in the coming year which will compound the issue.
Here is a map including the affected are inside the red lines:

I hope this will find it's way to the right people and maybe something
great can come of this.

Thank you again for responding.

Omg, I thought it was just MY house!

AT&T service definitely is horrible in Downtown Dunedin. One of the spots
has free wifi, but if you have AT&T, you do not get cell service for calls
etc...

I live just off Scotland-5 years...never have had service in the house, had
to get an iPhone 6 that switches to wifi in the house so I could use it.

AT&T never fixes it. May be we can all call? Or keep reporting it via their
"mark the spot" app?

I have trouble with reception in my house as well. I thought it was just
me! I never had problems with Verizon.

We did call AT&T when we were in Dunedin...lots of excuses...towers being
worked on...

Our AT&T is terrible as well. Our friends with Verizon seem to get more
reception bars on their phones.

Agreed! I have ATT as well and never get service inside anywhere downtown.

Hello again @CJBinFlorida,

I appreciate your reception to this issue, I am always here to help and want to ensure anyone who’s experiencing this service issues in the area is taken care of.

I checked back in on the status of the network health near you. The good news is It appears the network should be restored by tomorrow!

The Mark the Spot app is always something I recommend for service related problems. Feedback provided by customers is reported to our network and allows us to see where problems need to be addressed and where the reception needs to be improved.

Despite the trouble the outage is caused to everyone in the area, I am glad you came to the Community Forums. We are always here and happy to help!

Have a great day.

Well, if 7 years have passed and service hasn’t gotten any better, it’s not likely to improve anytime soon.  Another carrier may be a better option.
