Iliad roaming in USA

Hi, I am a long time AT&T customer (landline/U-verse).
I needed to have an Italian phone number, working also in USA, so when in Italy I did buy a SIM from Iliad (https://www.iliad.it/) because it uses AT&T as carrier for the USA.

Of course as soon as I did come back to the USA the phone can't roam via AT&T.

It find the network but is not registering.

Anybody knows the problem/issue or has suggestions ?

I'm living in Arkansas, not sure if is a "local problem" or nationwide problem with the roaming.

Thanks

This does not seem like it's an AT&T problem.

Most carriers do not roam for free.  Are you paying them for roaming?

You also didn't mention what phone you are using. If the phone is also of Italian origin, will it even work in the USA?

Or if you are using the Italian SIM card in an AT&T phone, did you make sure the phone was unlocked?

Hi, thanks for the thoughts.
What I'm trying to achieve is at least to understand the nature of the problem rather than pointing fingers, or maybe having somebody else with a similar problem suggesting a possible solution (other than of course trash the Iliad SIM and try to buy a different one from another Italian carrier).

I am of course in contact with Iliad and yes, I'm paying for the roaming.

The phone is a Samsung Galaxy A20 I used here in USA (with a USA SIM) so I know the phone is working, as well as I used it in Italy with the Iliad SIM, so I know phone and SIM working, in Italy and here in USA and yes, the phone is unlocked.

Thanks

The phone worked in both countries.  I'd say it rules out the phone, almost.

Reset the network settings on the phone and cross fingers.

The other wild card is illiads roaming ability.  If you can use text and data but not phone calls that would make me think that the Italian SIM card is not capable of voice over LTE service which is required in the United States.

Hi, I did also try other phones I had around with the similar result.
So yes, I would say phone problems are not the probable cause.

I did reset the network settings, also following some suggestions from Iliad.
I can't rule out maybe some wrong settings of the Access point, would be great to have somebody suggest something in that area.

At the moment I can't have any kind of mobile connection, nor text nor calls.
Also trying to manually connect the network is ending after a while with a laconic "No service. Selected network (AT&T) not available"

Iliad says that the problem could be caused by the dismissal of the 3G network from AT&T but why the others are not working as well ?
The phone can support LTE.

So I'm trying to understand the problem and see possible solutions .. at this point would be great at least to know that exists a solution.
Your last sentence would mean basically that I was sold something not true since Iliad did claim to support roaming in USA.

Thanks for the help

The phone can support LTE.

If the phone works with an AT&T SIM card, connect to the network for talk text and data, then it's not a problem with the phone being able to connect to AT&T.

LTE is not the same as VoLTE, voice over LTE.  If the Italian SIM card is not provisioned for voice over LTE service while roaming in the United States, it would essentially block service. I am a little surprised text and data don't work. Usually people report that they cannot make phone calls but that they can use data and text.   I can't imagine that the Italian SIM card is 3G only.

I'm signing off for the night.  Hope Iliad has a fix

Thanks for the help, I would be very happy even having only text.
The main reason to have the Italian SIM is to be able to receive emergency text from a safety device I gave to my father (93 years old) in order to know if he needs help.
Apparently that device can only call Italian numbers, thus the necessity to have a phone here with the Italian number.
I need to explore other possibilities, like having the device calling a number that can be redirected here in USA.

Maybe will be another discussion topic.
I hope at this point Iliad will have something but I doubt it, is it possible am I the only one with this problem and nobody else reported this to Iliad ?

Thanks

Well it's the first time Iliad has come up in my 9 year tenure on this forum.

Most of the people who come to the Forum are people who are from outside the country and purchasing AT&T service, rather than roaming with a different service provider.

It has to be hard to be that far away from an elderly parent 😔

Glad to be the first :)
Yes, is not easy to manage my father from another country, this why technology can help.  I was able to go there last month exactly to enable the service and helping him on other things.
Are more than 20 years I talk with him every day with a VoIP videophone, but now I had to add another layer (the safety device)  to be sure to cover more possibilities.
This why I'm so disappointed the SIM is not working after all the talk before to choose the provider .. yeah we use AT&T, yes, everything works, yes the roaming works ... evidently not.
And to change provider there is not easy remotely, many carriers require you to be present in person when you buy the SIM and contract, showing a document ... useless bureaucracy.
This why is not so simple to change until I'm here.

Again, thank you for the help, everything count to figure out a solution.

Is it possible to acquire a virtual Italian number? And will the device in question notify via a virtual number. I'm just trying to think outside the box

I don't know, something I can try to explore, thanks for the tip.
I see some companies offering virtual phone numbers, I'll see what can be done

I did ask Iliad if there is a way to redirect their number to a USA number or a USA Google voice number, that would be great.
I'll see next week if they are answering.

Once again, many thanks for the suggestions and support !!
