Issues with WIFI calling not working when it should

So the AT&T service in the area I live in is horrible. Service constantly shows 4-5 bars of service of 4G LTE or even 5G but the upstream on this service is horrible at best. When on voice calls people constantly can't hear my side of the call and data upstream is virtually non-existent. This issue happens with all phones on my plan (2 samsung, 2 iphones) and also happens everywhere within a 4-5 square mile radius of where I live to anybody I ever ask who has AT&T. I've reported it to AT&T multiple times, they run tests and tell me nothing is wrong but obviously nobody has ever checked service in this area in person.

Anyhow I'm tired of asking them to fix the issue but I really would like to be able to reliably use WIFI calling as a workaround. We have WIFI calling enabled on our phones, but they almost never seem to use WIFI calling, I'm assuming because they "see" full cellular service and think they don't need to? The only way to reliably get texts to send is to put the phones into airplane mode and then enable WIFI to "trick" it into using WIFI calling. So is there some better way to force WIFI calling to actually work at all times when on WIFI? I wish AT&T still offered microcells......

We understand how important it is to stay connected @3fingers.

Wi-Fi Calling lets you talk and text from indoor locations where it’s hard even for a strong cellular signal to reach. Wi-Fi Calling can be used in the Domestic Coverage Area. Check out our compatible AT&T WIFI calling devices to make sure you are getting the best connection with the wifi calling feature.

Once you have confirmed your device is compatible and your on a postpaid AT&T wireless account provisioned with HD Voice. You will then check your WIFI settings to set up and turn on the WIFI calling feature:

  1. Tap Settings on your phone, then tap Cellular (Apple devices) or Connection (Android devices).
  2. Check if Wi-Fi Calling's listed.
    • If it is, select Wi-Fi Calling.
    • If not, your phone isn’t compatible

Turn on Wi-Fi Calling so it’ll work when you need to make and receive calls. Keep in mind Wi-Fi automatically connects to almost any Wi-Fi network when cellular service is limited or unavailable.

Have more questions about Wi-Fi Calling? Get more information on our Wi-Fi Calling FAQ page.

I hope this helps improve your wireless experience. If it does not, check our our Mobility Troubleshooting hub for more information!  We're here if you have any questions.

You can force your phone to use Wi-Fi calling where Wi-Fi connection is available, like it home. What you do is you turn on airplane mode and then you turn Wi-Fi back on. This eliminates cellular connectivity and restricts your phone to wifi-only. You will want to take airplane mode off when you leave home or you will have no service

As usual, ATT support recites canned answers to unasked questions and has very little skill.

In android,  your phone's wifi calling settings section there is an option to "prefer mobile" or "prefer wifi".

Select "prefer wifi", reboot for good measure, check that it is still enabled after and see if that takes care of it.

Thanks @DJ5D - That's exactly what I've been doing for the past year or so and it works great now. Back when I originally posted this, my Android did not have that as an option.

Now if iPhone would just get a similar option we'd be in great shape, everybody else in my house has an iPhone.
