Voice on 4G with feature GoPhone
If I get a 4G-capable feature phone, as a GoPhone without a data plan, can I use the 4G for voice when I'm in an area where the 2G/3G signal is non-existent or too weak to use? (I know the GpPhone needs to be AT&T or a compatible unlocked GSM phone - I've been using unlocked GoPhones for years).
I live in a canyon in Northern California with virtually no cell phone reception. My 2G/3G GoPhone gets no reception and my Republic Wireless smartphone gets no signal on Sprint (the primary carrier) and a good Verizon roaming signal, except when the power goes out, when the Verizon also goes out (I assume the tower loses power). I need a phone I can count on in bad weather when the Verizon tower stops working.
A friend's laptop gets a very strong AT&T LTE signal here during storms and when none of the others get a signal , This is making me wonder whether it's possible to replace my GoPhone with a 4G feature phone and use it to make calls without a data plan.
I'm not concerned about HD Voice or Volte. I just want to be able to make phone calls when my other phones can't get a signal.

You have to have BOTH a post-paid account, AND a carrier branded (or newer iOS device) phone, to be able to make VoLTE calls.
Unfortuately, IMO, this is the policy, at least for now.
You DO actually care about VoLTE, even though it's not obvious, this is how (data) voice is implemented in LTE and WiFi calling scenarios.
I have a similar scenario at my house, I get bad/intermittent 3G service, but consistent LTE, but we have all non-branded devices.
