Wifi calling abroad- 2 SIM Android steps

So, if I'm traveling abroad, is there a way to have a foreign SIM active, plus ATT WiFi calling, when WiFi is available, at the same time? I have ATT as eSIM.

Is there a way that I can temporarily turn on ATT WiFi calling to check SMS? That is, before going abroad I should disable ATT eSIM and only enable it abroad when I have airplane mode on and Wi-Fi on? Do I have access to the setting to enable it at that point?

What happens if I forgot to turn off  the ATT eSIM before going into airplane mode and I'm now abroad?

(I have a Pixel 6a, but don't have two SIMS right now to test it myself. I don't know what settings are available at which point.)

Hello @Radiofan, we hear you and would like to help you.

Certainly! When traveling abroad, you can use a foreign SIM card while keeping AT&T Wi-Fi calling active when Wi-Fi is available. Here’s how you can achieve this:

  1. Dual SIM Setup:

    • Since you have AT&T as an eSIM, you can insert a physical foreign SIM card into your phone’s SIM card slot. This way, you’ll have both the foreign SIM and AT&T eSIM active simultaneously.
    • Make sure to configure the settings for the foreign SIM according to the local carrier’s instructions.
  2. WiFi Calling:

    • When connected to WiFi, your phone will prioritize WiFi calling over cellular networks. This means that even with the foreign SIM inserted, you can still make and receive calls using AT&T WiFi calling.
    • Ensure that WiFi calling is enabled in your phone’s settings. Go to Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi Calling and turn it on.
  3. Network Preferences:

    • In your phone’s settings, navigate to Connections > Mobile Networks.
    • You can choose the preferred network for data usage. If you want to use the foreign SIM for data, select it as the preferred network. If you want to use AT&T data (via eSIM), choose AT&T as the preferred network.
  4. Data Roaming:

    • Keep in mind that using data with the foreign SIM may incur roaming charges. Make sure to check the data roaming rates with your foreign carrier.
    • If you want to avoid data charges, disable mobile data when not needed or use WiFi exclusively.

Remember to adjust your settings based on your preferences and the specific country you’re visiting. Safe travels!

Let us know if this helps.

Thank you,

Thank you. Would I be able to turn Wi-Fi calling on and off when I'm abroad?

That way, I can control which thing I'm using for calls even if I'm connected to Wi-Fi.
