AT&T won't unlock replacement iPhone (bought at Apple)

@ATTCares,

I have been a customer of AT&T since 2016.

In May 2018 I bought a refurbished iPhone 7 direct from Apple. I used an AT&T SIM in this phone.

In March 2019, I had a problem with my iPhone 7 and Apple replaced it with a new iPhone 7, under warranty.

I have requested an unlock from AT&T for both the original and the replacement iPhone 7. The original iPhone 7 has been unlocked. However, AT&T had denied my request to unlock the replacement iPhone 7 (acquired in March 2019) because it has been active with AT&T for less than 6 months.

I got the replacement iPhone 7 in March because of a fault the iPhone (which was known to Apple), not through any fault of my own. So I am seeking an exception to AT&T's unlock policy so I can have my replacement iPhone 7 unlocked now. Can anybody help?

I have called AT&T (611) many times but I am just quoted the policy. Nobody will listen to my case to see if I am eligible for an exception to the policy.

Your correct it starts over with a replacement phone.  In this case I would file a FCC complaint since they can see the phones were switched in the system and should make a exception to unlock it.

I had the same issue as OP with a replacement phone that was locked on att but was a replacement phone through apple via applecare and the solution was to submit an unlock request on https://www.att.com/deviceunlock/ for the OLD original imei number of the original phone that was replaced.

I found the old box of the original defective iphone that was already given to apple during the replacement process and used the imei2 number on it to submit the request online and once that was approved (within 30 minutes) the new imei number was also unlocked! I dont know how they are connected on att's end when apple replaced the phone and i didnt activate the new phone/new imei on att but they are connected some how.

Save your old original boxes!
