Galaxy 5 Update failed 11/4/15

The latest update downloads, but fails when installing. It gets to about 3%, then says failed, and retrys the install. It does this loop about 3-4 times, then restarts. Failed to install. I retry the download, but says I have to wait 24 hours to retry the update as the phone says current update is the latest.

Current versions:

Android version 5.0

Baseband version G900AUCU4BOF3

Kernel version 3.4.0-4432708

Build number LRX21T.G900AUCU4BOF3

Update version:

  • Android version: 5.1.1
  • Baseband version: G900AUCU4COI5
  • Kernel version: 3.4.0-586384
  • Build number: LMY47X.G900AUCU4COI5

What do I do?

Clearing cache from reboot screen still did not fix it, update failed. Now have to wait another 24 hours to check for update. Suggestions?

Actually, although wiping the cache partition is something that I do both before and after an update to the operating system, that's not going to free up the space you need.   However, clearing the cached data, which is completely different from wiping the cache partition, may very well clear GBs of space.

Open Settings > Storage > Cached data and OK the option to Clear the Cached data.  This should free up a lot of space, especially if it's something that hasn't been done previously.

The linked instructions you were given for downloading and installing an update were for 5.0, which only required 3 GB of free space.  5.1.1 requires substantially more free space.  Although instructions indicate that 4 to 7 GB of space is required for installation, most people who had difficulty installing the update but later found success once they had enough free space, reported that success was achieved after they reached 6.4 GB of free space or more.

If you still do not have enough free space after clearing the cached data, move pictures, videos, etc. off your phone.  They can be restored later if you wish.

Once installation has been completed, then wipe the cache partition.

That finally did it. Had to uninstall Facebook and move several apps to SD card (which actually never moved so I had to uninstall them too). thanks.

Great!  I'm glad to hear the update finally installed for you.  Smiley Happy
