Galaxy Note Edge Locking Up in Hangouts and Chrome

I keep having problems with my Note Edge where if I am in the Hangouts app, I choose to add an attachement, and I choose the option to take a picture it will take almost a full minute for the camera app to launch.  Once it does finally launch I can tap the shutter to take a picture but then it just hangs again for about a minute before I can see the picture.  All-in-all it takes 3 - 5 minutes through Hangouts to take a picture and send it in the conversation.

For now I've resorted to taking the picture through the Camera app first and then selecting it it Hangouts.  It's extremely annoying that I have to use this work-around and switch between two apps instead of just using the functionality in Hangouts.

Also, with Chrome, the entire phone will lock up sometimes when a website is loading.  The entire UI will stop responding for about 15 - 30 seconds, then it will studder for a while before finally loading and becoming fluid again.

Are these known issues with Android 4.4.4 on the Note Edge that are being addressed with the forthecoming 5.0.x release?  On that Note (pun intended), is there any release date scheduled yet for the update? I'm anxious to see this perform up to its hype!

Hey @Navalynt

I’d be happy to help with your Galaxy Note Edge app performance!  This is certainly not how these apps should be performing. The first troubleshooting steps to resolve this would be to check for any updates. From the Play Store, tap the menu icon in the top left corner, then choose My Apps. Any available updates will show in the “Updates” section.

Next, try clearing the app cache. Head to Settings > Application Manager. Swipe across to the ALL category and choose the Hangouts application. Finally, tap Clear cache. I would also recommend performing this action for both the Camera and Chrome apps.

Should the issues still persist, enable Safe Mode. To do so, power the device off. Once off, hold the POWER button until the Samsung logo appears, then press and hold VOLUME DOWN until the device is powered on fully. Perform the same actions in the Hangouts and Chrome apps that cause the device to lock up. If they behave normally in Safe Mode, we can be sure an additional service is causing the irregular behavior.

The last recommendation would be backing up the device and performing a factory reset. Downloading Samsung Kies 3 makes backing up and restoring your device incredibly easy.  There is a great step-by-step guide to using Kies here. To perform the factory reset, see our article from the Device How To Center.

Thanks!

It should not do this. Take it in to AT&T to see if it can be resolved.

When I had a problem with my Note 3, I finally took it to Best Buy, to the Samsung desk where they fixed the problem for me.

I'm trying the backup/restore through Kies today.  It's been a hectic week but I finally have some time to dedicate towards figuring out my phone problems today.  Kies is backing up the phone as I'm typing this.

Aside from the application problems mentioned above I've noticed what may be an actual hardware issue.  Every couple of days, seemingly at random, the data connection drops.  The signal bars go from white to grey and data sits in a "Connecting" state through the phone test menu.  At first I thought this was due to running the Qualcomm BatteryGuru application made for Snapdragon based phones but I removed it earlier this week and the problem persisted.  Trying to toggle airplane mode or toggle mobile data didn't help at all.  The only way I could get the data signal back was a full reboot.

Here's a screenshot I grabbed from earlier this week of the phone test menu when the signal was greyed out:

A couble bits of feedback for Samung:

First, I'm disappointed in your Kies backup solution.  While it saved the applications themselves, it did not save the application data.  I had to re-log into everything and reset a lot of application preferences.  I could have had the same thing if I used Google's backup.  Kies would be much nicer if it saved at least the application preferences.

Secondly, after the wipe and restore it didn't take more then a few days before the phone was back to the same behavior.  Major lags in the camera UI, Hangouts, Chrome, Facebook, and sometime freezing up to where it takes 15 seconds to open the status bar.  That's an actual 15 seconds, I timed it.  It seems that when I need to use my phone the most I'm stuck waiting on the UI to respond.

Thirdly, the phone is still having issues with the radio.  I'll get voicemail notifications but the phone never rang.  Once I was on an important call at work and suddenly the call dropped and all signal was lost to the phone for about 30 seconds.  Usually I have 2-3 out of 5 bars on the phone so signal strength itself shouldn't be the issue.

Prior to the Galaxy Note Edge I was using an HTC One M8 and I never had these types of problems.  The phone ran flawlessly.  I'm questioning whether I just made a very expensive mistake by trying a Samsung phone instead of just waiting for the HTC One M9.
