Samsung Galaxy S4 active (i537) not connecting to mobile network

I'm hoping someone can help me with a problem I recently discovered on my device. I can't connect to the AT&T mobile network, so no 4g or bars, just a circle with a slash through it. I tried replacing the SIM card and that didn't work. I can connect to wifi and bluetooth, which I think should rule out the antena and the wireless card. Can anyone help me resolve this? I'm an engineer and comfortable replacing parts but I don't know what to replace.

Note: I occasionally get one bar of 4g with a very weak signal. it is too sparadic and inconsistant to use for making calls or anything really useful but I'm noting this because whatever isn't working is 100% broken yet. also, I do have the latest version of android installed.

Edit: I tried launching in safemode but this didn't help.

Hi russellomega,

Thanks for reaching out. We apologize for the negative experience. Do you recall this starting after a recent application download or update? If so please attempt a soft reset. Here are the steps: Power off the device, remove the battery for two minutes, and replace it. Power back on. Also do you notice this occurring in all locations inside and outside? If the soft reset does not work please try running and testing the device in safe mode for at least 2-4 hours. Here are the steps : http://bit.ly/1tpdmVL. If it works in sasfe mode then a third party app may be the cause. If so try uninstalling these apps starting with the latest one you installed first. Let us know if this helps. ^Jake

Hello Jake,

I noticed this problem gradually worsen over the past few weeks going from fair to weak to poor service in the same locations, such in my bedroom or in the kitchen. I cannot connect anywhere, regardless of location, except for the rare momentary blip that I mentioned.

I ran it in safe mode for 2 hours and nothing improved. I uninstallled any updates for core apps and that still didn't help

What else do you suggest?
