Have 3 DVR Boxes, only one works and that one is flaky and must be reset often

I've been a Uverse customer for YEARS.  I have U300 plus HD.  My boxes are quite old.  Both VIP1200s stopped working a long time ago so I don't have cable in the living room or office.  The VIP1216 in the bedroom works but freezes up fairly often. I can get it working by holding the power button for 10 seconds and let it reboot.  On the two VIP 1200 units, even all of the resetting instructions I've found on the Internet doesn't seem to work.  When my roommates parents had a similar issue (but only on two boxes) the rep said it wasn't even worth resetting these boxes as they are ancient.  Is that true?  How does one get newer boxes that work?  Does it cost money?  (Finances are tight right now).

@Shackmel- As far as the money  goes - you are responsible for the wiring in the house (that is charge for work) & att is responsible for the boxes & outside wire. so, If the boxes are bad they will replace them no charge.

The process is to cal 800-288-2020 for remote test to decide whether to dispatch tech or ship new box(s),

You need to let them know you have a problem & let them try to fix it.

You been paying a monthly lease on boxes that haven't worked for awhile?  Bummer.

Here's what I would do:

Call 800-288-2020 and get them to ship you three new boxes. It'll be free for you. All you need to do is send the old boxes back in the same boxes. They'll even include return labels. Just take them down to any UPS store and let the UPS employee do the rest.

The newer boxes are much faster and much more current technology inside them.

If they still don't work, call the 800 number back and get them to send a tech. I'm guessing that newer boxes will fix your issues.

Honestly, you should have called that number right away, but I can see why someone would be hesitant to do it with all the "upgrade fees" and other things that companies throw at customers.

There is absolutely no way to transfer recordings to a newer box...they'll be lost. Honestly though, this sounds the least of your worries, but I'm just letting you know in advance.

If the replacements don't work and you call them to send someone to fix it, it's likely that it will turn out to be an in-home wiring issue.  That will result in a trip charge for the trip.  So, when you're installing your replacement boxes, be sure the connections are all tight (especially if using coax) and there are no open ports/legs on your diplexor/splitter (if using coax).

Wow!  This a very helpful community.  The only box that has coax cable is the wireless internet/TV router.  The other boxes are all wireless. Since my internet works and the one wireless box works, I suspect the wiring in my house is up to snuff.  The only reason I haven't had the boxes fixed is because the ATT account is in my room-mates name and they wouldn't call.  However, if we are paying for 3 boxes, we should have 3 boxes.

Okay, I'm confused by that last statement.  You have wireless set tops?  You have a WAP for them?  This WAP is connected by coax to something?  What is that something?  Your DVR is connected to the RG by what?

You guys know more than I do. I completely forgot that the office TV was on Ethernet. The router is in the office with that TV. That DVR crapped out years ago....I'm guessing 4 or 5 but who knows.  The living room and bedroom are wireless though.  The living room didn't break until about 2 years ago if I had to take a guess.  My room-mate has almost died more than once, almost gone blind in one eye, been on unpaid medical leave, blah, blah, blah.  Sometimes, one has to concentrate on what's important.  Now that she's fine, and even has halfway decent sight in the eye that was going to go completely blind, it's time to fix the televisions.  🙂

Some clarifications:

  • You only really have one DVR, the 1216.  The 1200 can perform DVR functions, but only by communicating with the 1216.
  • None of these (1200, 1216) are wireless, they all must be connected back to the Gateway by either Ethernet or Coax.
