HDMI Audio Dropout on Pace DVR

So, I've just had U-Verse installed, and as soon as the tech left, I noticed no audio.  Here's my configuration:

Pace IPH8005 DVR - HDMI out to Monoprice HDMI switch (along with several other components)

One optical audio out to Bose sound system.  ( Only have one optical audio available )

This configuration worked just fine for Comcast, but while I have great picture, the sound drops out in less than a second.  Everything works fine if I go directly from the DVR to my TV via HDMI, but not through the switch (which is working properly).  The temporary workaround I found is to run optical audio from my DVR to my Bose system, but this won't work, as that excludes all of my other devices.

I spoke with a pretty decent U-Verse tech guy, who is sending a new box out tomorrow.  He says, however, that there have been firmware updates which include DRM protections, which may be causing this lack of sound through HDMI.

Also, there is no difference beteween selecting  "Stereo" and "Surround" in the system menu.

I see this was a fairly common problem a few years ago, but it appeared that it had been corrected.

Anyone having this issue?  Aware of a permanent fix?  Thanks!

KInd of crazy -

Make sure the audio language under the ENTER button is on English.

Not working through the HDMI switch may be because the the STB cannot see the HDCP signal saying it is not a recording device. But, that usually kills the video. Can you connect component cables to eliminate HDMI.

How about an optical splitter so you canuse the optical feed - http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=optical+splitter

Re: Also, there is no difference beteween selecting  "Stereo" and "Surround" in the system menu.

Was this one of the used to be problems - Usually the TV does not have a surround decoder & does not work HDMI on surround sound. Maybe yours does have a decoder & works. It should also work through the switch. No reason why it does not work through the switch. The cure for this was to feed the TV analog sound & optical to the sound bar.

What is model of your TV?

aviewer - Thanks for the reply!

Language = English, check

My monoprice switch does is HDMI only, so component is not an option for my setup.

I have a monoprice optical splitter (2X1), but these splitters go the wrong direction (1 feed into two), I would need to go the other direction, and I see there are ones with manual switches, but that defeats the purpose, since my monoprice switch is there to do everything automaticaly via HDMI (My system is in a closed cabinet)

The only feed I have going to my LG TV is HDMI out from that same monoprice switch, but If I run HDMI directly from my DVR to the TV, it works.

Here is what I have and what it looks like:

Monoprice switch (with several HDMI inputs, but only 1 optical out, which goes to my Bose Cinemate system)

Fed Ex is dropping a new box off today, so let's see if I just have a bad HDMI out on my DVR.  Otherwise, the tech support guy might be right on about DRM firmware messing this up?

Thanks again for jumping in on this with me.  I appreciate it.

You have serious physical complications & your own objectives (which I do not know -

RE: My monoprice switch does is HDMI only, so component is not an option for my setup.

My component recommend was based on most people select input on the TV and HDMI switch is added when they do not have enough HDMI on the TV. If you want to use the switch as the exclusive selector, then you cannot use component. But, if you are willing to share the selection with the TV, you can connect STB to TV via component.

I will look at the monoprice site to see if there are any critical details about the switch. I do see that there is an optical output, a COAX output and an analog output.

I was thinking You could connect the STB optical to the Bose & the switch to the  Bose COAX.

All these connections are probably getting too complicated.

I would like to lok at the manual for the TV. Please post the model number.

How are you controlling all this? THe U-verse remote, multiple remotes? or LOgitech?

Hi there, until now, I thought my setup was pretty simple. Maybe I'm doing a poor job explaining it.  I'll try again.

First, I have an LG 55LS4500 TV.

I also have:

Apple TV

Sony Blu Ray

U-Verse DVR

From all of these components, I run an HDMI into the monoprice switch via HDMI in.  There is one HDMI out which goes to my LG TV. (The only thing going to my TV is video) The one optical audio that comes out of the switch goes into my Bose Cinemate system, which controls the sound for all three components, regardless of input.  I have the sound off on my TV, so only sound comes from my Bose.

The whole thing is controled (splendedly, I might add) via my Harmony Hub and remote.

Everything has always worked exactly as it should, I switch from Cable to Blu Ray, etc, and the monoprice switch changes HDMI inputs and everything switches over (sound, audio, etc).  Except now, with my new Uverse service, I get no sound into my Bose system from the Uverse DVR box, unless I wire it directly past the monoprice box and into the one optical in that I have available (which means if I want Apple TV or Blu Ray, I have to physically unplug stuff - deal breaker)

Now, when I change channels or any other menu option (strange, I know) on my Uverse DVR, I will get roughly 1 second of audio via this setup, then the audio drops out.  Occasionally it will come back up, for for no more than a second or two at the most, then it drops again.

Am I explaining it better?

Incidentally, Fed Ex just dropped off my new DVR, but UVerse accidentally sent me a new Gateway.  They tell me I cannot self-install a DVR, so a tech has to come out next week.  Grrrr.

@livefan431 I see the basic problem, the DVR is not getting all the security/control signals through the switcher if you go to another source and it never received the 'see ya later' signal from the TV.  That tends to screw up the Uverse DVRs and cause funny things to happen.

Earlier DVRs would reboot or change the TV resolution, they did not like the lack of the HDMI ending signals from the TV.  In your case, it's shutting off the audio, no work around for it, but direct connect to the TV. 😉

Bull crunch, I've self-installed DVRs that were dropped shipped, first one was a defective 1225, that would reboot any time you clicked Menu or Recordings.  They went above and beyond and put my 1216 back on the plan, so I still had TV.  Then Uverse Care drop shipped me a 2250 I self-installed until it locked up a year later w/a red X on a Sunday.

That one I called in and had a tech deliver a DVR on Monday aft, but couldn't set it up as Uverse TV was down at the time he was here.  Unluckily it was a 1225, he apoligized he didn't have a 2250 to replace it, he started w/3, but used them on the 3 previous repairs that day. 😉

Yeah, I wasn't buying it either, except she said her system wouldn't allow the order to go through. But, I suppose if you are correct, a new box isn't going to change anything if the system is going to keep me from doing it this way.  So, there's no hurry in getting a new box at this point.

Thanks for your help on this, I'll start thinking of a new fix.

I wouldn't say that, it's just some goofy action by the Uverse DVRs when they don't get the proper signals through HDMI.  There's a huge number of constant control and security signals sent.

HDMI switchers have been a big problem on Uverse as many users have run into problems using them and having goofy results like you. Smiley Surprised

OK, I looked at the monoprice site & see that there are two possibilities on the switch, but both support HDCP aka DRM. Besides I think it would be the video that DRM would kill.

In any case you know it works with a direct connection.  & does not via the switch.

I looked at the TV Manual & see it has an optical output. I do not see any mention that it is only for broadcast. It should work for all inputs.

My recommend is to connect the TV optical out to the Bose.

Connect the Apple & Blue Ray HDMI to the TV

Connect the U-verse STB component

Select the input on the TV menu

Isn't the Logitec Hub great! I use it for my three TVs. See my avatar. Here is my experience in case you want to try some programming -https://forums.att.com/t5/Using-your-U-verse-TV/Logitech-Harmony-Smart-Control-Remote/m-p/4028946#M2963
