IPH8010 DVR random screen black

After receiving a DVR upgrade to the IPH8010, I have been experiencing a randomly occuring issue with the loss of video.  The video appears to flash  Black -- Picture -- Black within a second.  It always flashes the black screen twice and as far as I can tell, happens on any channel.  The only difference in my setup is the new DVR.  I am using HDMI for video ( on old and new DVR ) and I have changed to a new HDMI cable but the problem still exists.  I have also confirmed the problem is present in 720p and 1080i resolutions.

I know many will say to use component inputs, but I don't have any free component inputs and the previous DVR did not show the problem using the exact same setup.

Is this a DVR firmware issue?  Is there a resolution?

I forgot to add that when the video flashes, the audio is not affected.

@terechenok - It does sound like the new DVR does not see the TV "non record" signal periodically & shuts down the video.

You could call for a new one.

You could try a shorter HDMI cable or a different HDMI input on the TV.

The sure cure is what you are dodging - component connection. You can run a test with any three RCA ended cables you can scrounge up. You can probably even get away with one cable.Try each of the component connections until you have a picture(although not a very good one) & let it run to see if it persists. If you can do three video & two audio you can actually watch it. Don't you have a cable that connects composite? I have whole bunch of them left over from that period. They work just as good as component colored cable. which works a good as HDMI (when HDMI works).

Cables are not the problem.  Lack of available inputs are. My only component input is already in use for an older device without an HDMI output.

clearly this is a DVR HDMI issue.  Using workarounds and not demanding full functional compatibility between devices employing an industry standard is foolish in the long term.  At some point component video inputs will go the way of composite and S-video.  What will be the fix then?   A Simple firmware update that adds some margin to the timing requirements of the HDCP protocol would make the entire system more robust and eliminate consumer frustration.

@terechenok   If the DVR functions are still not working properly, try a Non-Destructive Disaster Recovery.

Unplug the power cord of the DVR from the wall or from the back of the box and wait ten seconds. Plug the DVR back in.

When three white dots appear on the screen, unplug the DVR again. Repeat this process two more times.

Plug the DVR back in on the third time and leave in. Three white dots appear followed by a gear with a status bar at the bottom of the screen.

If the Disaster Recovery screen does not appear, repeat the steps above. If the Disaster Recovery screen appears, wait until completion.

If the Non-Destructive Disaster Recovery does not work, follow the steps for a Force Disaster Recovery

Re-downloads all the software. Will not erase recordings, takes a bit of time or so. I do one every few months to get rid of any bugs in the software.

If it still does it's shenanigans it's defective and needs a replacement.  Good luck 😉

@mibrnsurg Thanks for the tip about disaster recovery. I tried it and will monitor the system for a while to see if the screen blanking is still there or if it is gone. Thanks again.

How do you do a Force disaster recovery?

@terechenok

WARNING!: Disaster Recovery steps will cause your DVR to lose all pre-existing data such as:

  • Recordings
  • Parental control settings
  • Aspect ratio settings
  • Hold down the Down arrow key + OK key + Power key at the same time to power down the DVR.
  • Continue pressing these keys until a gear appears on the screen and release the Down + OK + Power keys.
  • If the gear on the TV screen appears, wait until completion.
  • If the gear on the TV screen does not appear, repeat the disaster recovery process.
  • If the previous steps have been exhausted and the TV receiver continues to malfunction please send a private message with your account number and contact details to ATTU-verseCare for further assistance. If you are not a member of the U-verse community forums, we welcome you to register and reach out to us.

Good luck 😉

Disaster recovery didn't solve the problem.  I have tried multiple HDMI cables, different inputs on TV and running the HDMI into my reciever first before the TV and the issue is still present.

Call TS 1-800-288-2020, might still be able to have a tech bring a new DVR tomorrow.  Tell them you already did a forced disaster recovery so they don't make you go thru them all again.  Good luck 😉

Not sure if you still have this issue but I did too. I have a Yamaha Audio/video amp in the middle between my IPH8010 and the TV.

I used to get constant black screen while sound was ok, I use optical for sound.

Here is what I did:

Go to the options menu on the IPH8010 to switch resolution. Select HD and then switch the resolution. It does not actually matter what resolution you end up on, if you are on 720 then pick 1080 and vice versa. Once applied, the black screens went away for me except for a very very rare occurence. It used to be constant, now it's maybe once an hour.

I hope it helps
