U-Verse is still running, but is not accepting new customers. Existing ones have received encouragement to move to other services but there is no hard phase out or shut down as of yet.

Why do you ask?

I heard that ATT wants to get rid of handling UVERSE equipment. plus it's getting too costly to pay for that service monthly.

Funny I have been a Uverse customer for 4 years, they haven't contacted me about changing.

They are not proactively doing so, but if you call they often will mention other options under the AT&T umbrella. But that could change at any time. Sounds like you were one of the last new customers they accepted.

I’ve had UVERSETV for 16 years (2007) but they’ll have to rip my DVR out of my cold, dead hands.  😜

How much you planning on living…

In early summer 2015 before ATT purchased DirecTv they had about 7.2 million IPTV subscribers while Verizon Fios was about 7 million.

ATT has not reported Uverse subscribers since and has sold off Uverse along with DirecTv summer 2021. So exact number of satellite, versus streaming versus IPTV subscribers are not known.

But Verizon on 3rd quarter 2023 report stated…

Verizon lost 78,000 net pay TV subscribers for its Fios consumer video service in the third quarter, ending it with just more than 3.0 million, the telecom giant said on Tuesday.

It had lost 69,000 users in its consumer division in the second quarter and lost 95,000 in the year-ago period.

Verizon also lost 1,000 business Fios video customers on the third quarter. The company has in the past often cited “the ongoing shift from traditional linear video to over-the-top offerings” as a key driver of video subscriber declines.

That is a Verizon loss of 4+ million video subscribers or 57% over past 7 years. I suspect the Uverse IPTV subscribers are likely similar around 3 million while ATT internet subscribers in all hardwired platforms was around 15.4 million with 8 million being FTTP (direct fiber) accounts .

As mentioned, they are simply not accepting new customers but there is no announcement, timeframe, etc. of shutting off existing ones. So probably still have a while before that.

Catching up on your DVR is still a good idea. Those recordings aren't permanent (any licensing changes to the shows, technical issues, etc.). Just find a good pace since there is no rush.
