DVR playback freezes during high network activity

Today while I was watching a recording on my DVR, the playback would freeze and restart over and over.  I realzied this was happening only while I was downloading a large file to my computer.  As soon as the download stopped, the playback was completely mormal.  I even went back to a portion of the playback that was freezing during the downlload to ensure it was normal after the download stopped.  I could reproduce the problem very easily just by starting another file download.  this is espeically confusing since the file already existed on the DVR. I don;t undrstand whay high network traffic would have to do with playback.

Is your DVR plugged directly into the AT&T Gateway or a switch of some sort?  Were you watching the TV connected to the DVR or another STB watching a recorded show?  If you were watching on another STB, how is it connected?  Coax or Cat 5?  Is it a wireless STB?

@prchandler If the DVR functions are still not working, try a Non-Destructive Disaster Recovery.

Unplug the power cord of the DVR from the wall or from the back of the box and wait ten seconds. Plug the DVR back in.

When three white dots appear on the screen, unplug the DVR again. Repeat this process two more times.

Plug the DVR back in on the third time and leave in. Three white dots appear followed by a gear with a status bar at the bottom of the screen.

If the Disaster Recovery screen does not appear, repeat the steps above. If the Disaster Recovery screen appears, wait until completion.

If the Non-Destructive Disaster Recovery does not work, follow the steps for a Force Disaster Recovery

Will not erase recordings, takes a bit of time or so. Good luck 😉

Already did that.  It didn't correct the problem.

@prchandler, DVR connected directly to the Gateway by what kind of cabling?  Coax or Cat5e?  Through the wall or by a single cable?  If a single cable, have you tried replacing the cable?

If coax-through-the-wall, have you checked all the connections for tightness (to the wall plates, on the back of wall plates, at the DVR, at the RG)

THe DVR is connected to the Gateway by a single Cat5 cable.  they sit right next to each other on a shelf.  Let me repeat...this problem only surfaces during high network activity.  Previously I would have thought that DVR playback is an operation striictly between the DVR and hte TV - though I understand the STB validates a current subscription before allowing access to recordings.  If there were a problem with the connectivity between the DVR and the Gateway, the issue I am experiencing would not go away when the network activity (download) stops.

The reason we are asking these questions is because some people add a switch for additional ethernet ports and plug in the DVR or other Uverse boxes, connected via ethernet, to their switch.  It causes issues.  If the DVR is connected directly to the AT&T Gateway then you should be fine.  That's the way it's supposed to be.

One last question........When you are downloading the "large" file, is the device your loading it to hardwired or wireless?  If hardwired try connecting wireless, and if wireless try hardwired.  Just trying to see if we can determine what's causing it and get a different behavior depending on connection type.

I missed that you were having issues with recording Playback on the TV connected to the DVR.  (I assumed it was on another receiver).  You only have the one TV Receiver (the DVR)?
