Can't initiate wifi calling after changing phone number

After moving from Texas to West Virginia, I elected to change my phone number to a number with a WV area code. I live where there is NO cell service so use wifi calling. When I try to turn on wifi calling after changing number, I receive the message "Provisioning failed, please try again later." I changed my number 4 days ago; have powered down several times and still nothing. Can someone help with why this is happening?

Hello @Watson5945, we're happy to help with tips to set up your Wi-Fi calling.

If you are getting the provisioning error, this may indicate there is a missing requirement or setting to access the Wi-Fi calling feature.

What's the Make and Model of your device? It’s important to check the device model numbers to make sure it’s still supported since the 3G network shutdown. This includes iPads, tablets, and wearables.

Once you know your device still works, you may need to restart your device or check the VoLTE or LTE status and follow the below steps in your device settings to set up Wi-Fi calling.

  1. Tap Settings on your phone, then tap Cellular (Apple devices) or Connection (Android devices).
  2. Check if Wi-Fi Calling's listed.
    • If it is, select Wi-Fi Calling.
    • If not, your phone isn’t compatible.
  3. Review important info and confirm your emergency 911 address.

You can call, text, and use Visual Voicemail with Wi-Fi Calling. Just make sure you have:

  • A Wi-Fi internet connection
  • A compatible AT&T Wireless phone or AT&T PREPAID phone with Wi-Fi turned on and an eligible plan
  • An AT&T Wireless or AT&T PREPAID account set up for HD Voice.

Your phone will work if the HD Voice feature is turned on. If you can’t make or receive calls, or you’re having trouble accessing data, check the VoLTE or LTE status of your phone. Here’s how:

  • iPhone 7 and above: Go to Settings, then General, and lastly Software update. Select Download and install to update to the most current software version.
  • iPhone 6: Go to Settings, then Cellular, and then Cellular data options. Choose Enable LTE then select Voice and Data and turn on LTE.
  • Android: Go to Settings and then Connection. Choose Mobile networks and then Enhanced LTE services and select On.

Visit our Wi-Fi calling support page for additional step by step instructions. We're here if you have any questions. Thank you for contacting AT&T Community Forums.

I had wifi calling on the same device (Samsung Galaxy Note 8) until June 15th when I changed my telephone number. I know how to turn it on and how to turn it off - it's on the front page of my settings. I attempted to look at my AT&T account settings last night to be sure it was still enabled but of course, the website was unavailable. As stated in original post, I've powered down & restarted several times (I had to restart to activate new telephone number.)

Thank you for the update @Watson5945.

There's a few troubleshooting steps to resolve your Wi-Fi experience on your Samsung Note 8. Follow the steps below for common solutions for the provisioning error when setting up  Wi-Fi calling.

  • Go into Settings > CONNECTIONS tab > Wi-Fi > Locate your Network > Tap & Hold It > Forget. Then, turn Wi-Fi off/on, find your network, and reconnect to it. This will help reset all connections to the device.
  • Check Smart Network Switch settings: Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and unchecking the box next to "Smart Network Switch". Then go to Wi-Fi calling, turn it off, then back on. This will enable your Wi-Fi connection manually from the device.
  • Review and Manage your Android device location with Google services. If you recently moved, follow Google's recommended steps to refresh your devices location to assist with Wi-Fi calling accessing your location and available Wi-Fi connections.
  • In addition, the option may be to replace your SIM card which help identifies and connects you to a wireless network if you recently changed your wireless number, and are experiencing service disruptions.

We also have a great Troubleshoot & Resolve tool online. Select your make and model > Calling > Wi-Fi Calling and follow the prompts. This will provide more troubleshooting for this feature. We hope this information helps you. If you need any additional assistance, please let us know. Thank you for reaching back out to AT&T Community Forums.

@ljaimesco

Make sure Airplane Mode is on first and then turn on WiFi. Make sure you see the symbol for WiFi Calling.

If that doesn't work, start a new thread as this one is from 2022.
