You may have to call AT&T to change your phone number. Changing your phone number will not stop spam phone calls and telemarketers. They call numbers in sequence, they do not call just you. If you are being harassed AT&T may agree to change your phone number for free if you have documentation to prove it, like a restraining order.
If you have any two-factor authentication tied to your phone number you will lose access to all of those things that are two-factor authenticated and you will not be able to get your old phone number back to fix it
