Deleting contacts on device and Address book does not work. Help!

A while ago, I had trouble with my Phone (samsung S4) reading my sim card. I thought there might have been some issue with my contacts list so I reimported the list only to find that it super duplicated everything and added a whole bunch of unwanted contact information.

Well tried deleting duplicate accounts for contacts on my Samsung s4. The sync to AT&T brought them back even though it shouldn't. Went to the address book at at&t. Deleted the extra contacts that way. As soon as it synced to the phone, it brought them back. I'm so  frustrated. I have spent hours deleting in both places only to have all of my work undone by the Sync. The only answer I got from this intensely stupid woman on at&t chat help was that I should just link them. That was after having to explain that that was the problem. I don't want to link 15 versions of the same contact. It means when I go to call them 15 phone numbers present to me. I want to delete a contact and have it actually delete!!

I dont know what to do. Syncing is just bringing back everything. Address book does not contain all of the information my contact list on my phone does so there is no easy way to delete both places and know that I have deleted the same entry for each person.

Am I stuck with joining 15 accounts for each contact or am I stuck with having to turn sync off and never have a back up capability for my phone's contact list? Or is there something I am missing?

I have one suggestion based on personal experience
I changed carriers, so I had to save all my phone contacts, at the same time my yahoo email was hacked, to prevent my contacts being sent spam, I had to delete all from my yahoo account.

To resolve the problem, I sent everything to Gmail, I had it merge and delete duplicates (using a computer ) Then i synced the Google account with my Samsung phone. One comprehensive list!

You will want to delete your Google account on the phone before hand, delete all contact information on the phone, then add the Google account back.

Hi @Kiantewench

I’d love to help with your contacts issue! You’re absolutely right that the sync is causing this issue. I do have a recommendation to help solve this.

So, first we’d need to stop AT&T Address Book from syncing. The quickest way we can achieve this without digging too deep is to simply enable Flight Mode, stopping any information from being retrieved or sent. To do this, head to Settings and tap Flight Mode to enable.

With Flight Mode enabled, go ahead and delete the unwanted/duplicate contacts from your device. Once that’s completed, head to AT&T Address Book via your computer to also remove the same contacts.(www.att.com/att/addressbook/)

As the contacts have now been removed from both locations, we can disable Flight Mode by tapping it again in Settings, and they will not be restored.

If you do find that the contacts return, it’s possible they’re being pulled from elsewhere. Try checking http://google.com/contacts for the same contacts.

Should you find this does not resolve the issue, please send us a private message (https://forums.att.com/t5/notes/privatenotespage) with your cell and/or account number. We’d love to help!
