FamilyMap App

Hi,

So I just received a text saying, "You can now be located by ###-###-###. Tap the link to join AT&T FamilyMap." I have not downloaded this app and personally I don't want to be tracked.

I am not the account holder. So my question is, even though I am not the account holder, can the account holder have access to the locations of all the phone numbers listed on the account? I want to know if there is any way possible(even if that means monthly fees or upgrades) for the account holder to find my location, even though I do not have the app on my phone. I checked the FAQ for the app, but it is too vague and a bit confusing for me.

I also called AT&T, but the lady on the phone was not very sure. So I am looking for a very sure answer.

Thanks!

Hi there! @jessicalee1990 Thanks for posting your questions.

AT&T FamilyMap is an application that allows customers to locate a family member's phone via their own phone, tablet, or the Web as long as the devices are on the same account. They can also schedule checks and be notified of a family member's location on specific days/times. If you have an iPhone you must have the AT&T FamilyMap app installed and running in the background for it to be located.

Thanks!

Jessica,

Yes, you can be tracked even though you do not have the app on your phone.  The email that you received has a link to opt out (but I haven’t tried that).

Charise,

You say that “If you have an iPhone you must have the AT&T FamilyMap app installed and running in the background for it to be located.”  I was able to track an iPhone 5S yesterday and the FamilyMap app is not installed on that phone.  (I was not able to track a second iPhone though.)

I recieved this text from someone on an at&t plan but i have an entirely different carrier that is a pay by mobile the month no contract account at mobile nation so is there any possibility that this could still work tracking my location with different carriers or does anyone know of any other tracking apps or hacks or whatever that can be installed without having your phone in hand to install it
