How does vacation mode work for people who try to call me

I am planning to be away for a few months and leave my phone on vacation mode. However, I don’t want everyone who attempts to call me to know that I’m out of the country. What happens when someone attempts to call me? Are they notified that my phone is on vacation mode or disconnected? What is the exact message given to callers?

I also plan to use another country’s sim while I’m away.

@Brooke27

If you suspend your service voluntarily, anyone who calls will get the message that your number is not available at this time. There will be no option to leave a voicemail.

Reduced rate suspension is only available for emergency situations like long-term medical care or incarceration.  AT&T no longer does reduced rate suspension just because you are traveling by choice.

You would be much better off porting your phone number to Google voice. Google voice will allow you to continue to use your phone number abroad using data for talk and text.  Porting your number to Google voice will cancel your AT&T service so you will not have to worry about a bill.

Since you have to pay off your phone anyway in order to unlock it and use it abroad, this seems like the most sensible option

What is “vacation mode”?  I’ve had iPhones since the first one, and haven’t heard of that.  Do you mean airplane mode?  If someone tries to call you while your phone is in airplane mode, the call simply goes to voicemail, same as any other call that isn’t answered.  There is no special message.  Just the standard VM greeting.

Vacation mode is a temporary feature for AT&T service that you can ask for while away to temporarily disable service.

Hello @Brooke27, we hear you and would like to help you.

Here are some details mentioned in response to your inquiry-

Have a combination of internet, phone, or U-verse TV service? You’ll have to put each one on hold. You can place all other AT&T services on Vacation Hold as needed. For example, if you have DIRECTV, AT&T Internet, and AT&T Phone, you can keep DIRECTV active, but you’ll have to suspend AT&T Phone and Internet together.

You can put your service on Vacation Hold twice within a 12-month period. The minimum time you can suspend service is 2 months and the maximum is 9 months.

You’ll have to meet these requirements to place your service on hold:

  • Account in good standing
  • Active service for at least 30 days
  • Start date between 10 and 30 days from the day you request the hold
  • Restoration of service between 60 and 270 days from the start date.

I hope this information helps.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Thank you,

Jessica, AT&T Community Specialis

Jessica, since she posted in Wireless and didn't mention any of those services, and mentioned people trying to call her, your answer is a bit of a stretch.  But that does show that you can google AT&T VACATION HOLD.  Nice job.

You can SUSPEND service, which means your phones quit working other than emergency calls.  You still have to pay full price for your Wireless service, it just doesn't work.  To be honest, I'm not sure what callers get.

Jessica, I googled that bit. What I want to know is what would callers get when my phone plan is on vacation mode?

@Brooke27 One option is to have WiFi calling setup and if you call anyone it will seem that you are not out of the country. You can make/receive calls or text messages on WiFi calling. You need to read up on international travel and WiFi calling. I use WiFi calling all the time when overseas and the caller ID is no different that when in the US.

David, nothing account specific.  Just a general question.  Would you answer it here for everyone, please?

"This means we won’t be able to look into account specific concerns."

And how is this an account-specific concern? This David makes other Davids look awful.
