How to avoid International Day Pass charges
I have an AT&T International Day Pass on my US wireless plan. When I travel to the UK, it allows me to use my home plan at $10 a day.
Question #1:
There are days when I don't need to use the plan. What settings should I disable so as not to inadvertently incur the daily charge?
Question #2:
The plan description cautions that apps running in the background that use data will trigger the daily $10 fee. How do I determine this? And how is "use data" defined in this context? For example, can I still use my phone camera and download the photos to my PC without incurring the daily fee?
I phoned AT&T customer service on several occasions to ask these questions and got different answers each time. This suggests that customer service is just as confused as I am.

You can also turn the plan off in your myATT account. There is no limit on how often you can turn it on and off - as long as you are able to login that is.

I traveled to The Dominican Republic and Mexico and wanted to avoid the international charge. Each morning I would try to remember to check to make sure "Cellular Data" is set to off. But I recently found out that is not enough. You need to disable "Wi-Fi Assist" on an iPhone. Go to Settings->Cellular. Then scroll all the way down and disable "Wi-Fi Assist". If it's checked (enabled) then you may incur cell charges if you wander away from Wi-Fi like we do at vacation resorts. Hope this helps.

A related question: We will be traveling in several African countries and simply want to read/delete emails while we are gone so we don't have 500+ when we get home. We don't really want to make actual phone calls from there to home, unless we have an emergency. The International Day Pass seems the right option for that. HOWEVER, I just thought about incoming phone calls/cold calls/sales calls. All those annoying ones we get every day. Will those incoming calls trigger a usage fee for each day these calls come in? And can I somehow turn that off?

Maybe. Any call answered will definitely trigger the daily charge but even calls not answered could trigger the daily charge.
Put your phone in airplane mode and only turn airplane mode off when you want to use cellular.

Thanks, Sandblaster. Sounds like that will work. That's what we will do.

How will you be accessing email? With wifi? If so, just put your phone in airplane mode, and turn wifi back on.

Lizdance and Sandblaster,
I think what we will do is keep the phone turned off entirely except when we want to check emails. Am I correct in thinking that when it is off any attempted incoming phone calls will not trigger a payment?? If so, that way we only trigger the per day payment when we intentionally turn on the phone to look at emails. Yes?

Hello @maryphotograph
Allow for us to answer your questions on using our International Day Pass while traveling abroad.
As previously mentioned in the thread, the International Day Pass will be a $10/day chare for one line. $5/day for additional line added. With this package, it comes with unlimited talk, text, and data. For more information on when you would be charged is the first time you use data, send a text, or make or accept a phone call. You won't trigger another daily fee until the next time you use your device in another country after that 24-hour period ends.
Feel free to check out more information on our other International Plans.
We hope this information was helpful and have a great day!
