International Day Pass

International day pass does not charge you unless you connect to a non-USA service provider.   So no.  

This is a feature you can leave on all the time while you are in the USA or a country that provides free roaming, you will not get charged.

ie:

If your plan covers North American roaming you also won't get charged in Canada or Mexico.

AT&T customers roam free in Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands on Liberty mobile.  So even with international day pass on you would not get charged for use in Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands.

You also would not get charged with international day pass enabled if you were on the elite or premium plan and roam in the 20 Latin American countries that are covered by the premium and elite plans.

In response to your concern I would like to inform you that, yes, turn data roaming on to use cellular data. Highly suggest you turn it back off when you don’t need data. That will prevent you from getting the $10 charge unintentionally because your phone will use data even when you aren’t.

Just to confirm though, if roaming is on, I will not get charged while in the U.S.?

You get charged for International Day Pass when your phone connects to a foreign carrier under the IDP roaming agreement.  You'll get a text telling you your 24 hour period has started.  You can use it as much as you want for 24 hours without additional charge.  Once the 24 hour period has expired, the next time your phone does anything to connect to a foreign carrier, the cycle will repeat.

While you're in the US, International Day Pass is meaningless.  You roam like you would have before you signed up with no difference in the charge for roaming.  You can just leave it on all the time and it will only activate when you're outside the country.

We feel very ripped off by the Day Pass.  My phone stays in Airplane mode and I am make calls on Wifi. Some days AT&T charges me for a day pass even though I am in Airplane Mode and on Wifi.  (Some days they don’t.  It’s a crap shoot and inconsistent.). But all of their documentation and rules say that if you keep your phone in airplane mode, you won't be charged for a day pass.  I am thinking someone will start a (Edited per community guidelines) (Edited per community guidelines) against AT&T soon.  

I do not recommend using AT&T abroad unless you are ok with paying for a day pass even when you don't want to use it.

Unless your phone is defective, putting it in airplane mode cuts off all communication ability. Nothing in, nothing out.  No cellular, no Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth.

If you turn Wi-Fi back on,  you can connect to Wi-Fi sources and use Wi-Fi call and text which would be free back to the United States.  

If you turned airplane mode off in order to connect to Wi-Fi, you would have also connected to cellular and would have used cellular service, and would have been charged for international day pass. 

Read your usage reports.  Your usage reports will indicate when you connected and what services you used.  

@TravelTips You will be able to turn Bluetooth and WiFi back on while the phone is in Airplane Mode. I have my iPhone setup to keep Bluetooth and WiFi turned on when in Airplane Mode. You may want to look into unlocking your phone and using a local SIM.
