International travel - Is this the best way?

Attention: International Day Pass prices are changing. Starting May 14, you'll pay $12/day for one line and $6/day for each additional line used on the same day.

Hello-

I have the International Day Pass feature enabled. However, I am a cheapskate and don’t even want to spend the $10/day if I don’t have to do so!

I also like to use live maps for navigation. I do have maps downloaded, but I like live maps that show traffic issues in real time. So I plan to buy a local eSIM for this. I will not have phone call or SMS capabilities with that.

I believe I can switch back to my ATT SIM when I am on wifi? In this case, I will switch my phone to airplane mode with wifi on. Then I should be able to call/text with family in the US? I do have wifi calling enabled.

Do I understand the situation correctly?

I have never used an alternate eSIM. When I switch to the temporary eSIM, is there any “danger” of the ATT SIM connecting and me incurring charges through that?

Anything else I should know?

You can go into Settings>Cellular and turn on/off as needed your AT&T line to insure no IDP $10.00 charge. This is the procedure I use and have not incurred the IDP charge this way. I do insure that I am in Airplane Mode

prior to turning on the AT&T line. I like to have a local eSIM with calling and texting capability to contact local establishments.

Hello @Maryjay60,

Thanks for reaching out to us, and we're here to clarify things for you.

You won’t be charged by ATT unless you call, text or use data over the cellular network. If you have airplane mode on, that means you have cellular off. As long as cellular is off and you don’t connect to a cellular network, you won’t get charged.

Also, using other carrier eSIM while your out of the country will not put your AT&T SIM into danger. We would suggest you to remove the physical SIM and not use it.

However, we would suggest you to activate the International Day Pass as it gives you many benefits also you will be charged only when you make use of it.

For more information on the International Day Pass refer to the link.

We hope these information helps, if there is anything else do get back to us.

Thank you for contacting AT&T Community Forums.

I have IDP activated. My phone does not have a physical SIM, since it is an iPhone 14.
