Passport Gold Pros, Cons, Gotchas?
We will be traveling to Scotland for 10 days. Where we are staying, we will have Wifi so I know that I will be able to Facetime our family for the "calling" portion. What I am concerned about is ensuring that we have enough data to use Google Maps (since we will be traveling to sight-see type places) and texts between us and family in the US, as well as texts with the group of people we are traveling with.
Does anyone have experience with using the Gold plan? Was it enough data, too much data, were there any obstacles or things you wish you would have known ahead of time? I just want to ensure that I have good info before spending the $120 on each of our lines.

Yes maps will require data.
I have an estimate for data use with mapping and turn-by-turn.
It varies.
If you are using Apple maps the usage is about 10-15 Mbs per hour. Google maps on an android uses 25-35 Mbs per hour. So if your using Iohones, you will use less data, but it can add up to about 400-800 Mbs or 1/2 to 3/4 a gigabyte with 24 hours use.
The cost of overage data is small. It's basically what you are paying for if you buy the $120 plan.
($120 / 800 Mbs is 15 cents per mb. Same as the overage fee if you exceed the 800)
If you have at least one iPhone and traveling together, you still don't need that much data, put it one phone on the $120 plan. That phone is the navigator. Put the others on the $40 plan.
If you are exploring in different directions then put all on the $120 plan. Most people find the $120 plan is a waste of money.

If you have iPhones and access to wifi, why spend $120 on each phone? The $30 plan will be plenty. Use text, which is free. TURN iMessage OFF ! iMessage uses data, which is not free. Text/SMS or MMS is free. Use wifi for calls and data.

While we are at the house, we will have wifi. But we are going on several tours (almost a different place every day) across Scotland and will be driving ourselves. Google Maps will be heavily used and that requires data, right?
