Using an old device to leave myself voicemail

Question

I have a relatively old home alarm system that I would like to have leave me a voicemail when an event is triggered--without calling my mobile phone. I found the local phone number to access AT&T wireless voicemail, and how to use keypresses to retrieve messages. I have to believe it could also be used to leave messages, but what are the keypresses to do so?

I can't imagine how a voicemail can be left without calling the phone, even if the contact was set to silent ringer.

It was possible a long time ago when I was either using T-mobile or Verizon. We used to be able to leave voicemail messages for other users, too, or forward voicemails, etc., through the system without calling from or to our cell phones. Maybe AT&T never did, but that seems unlikely. What I think is more likely (though I hope hasn't happened) is that that ability was discontinued.

Never mind. The solution was I can't call from my cell phone to test what's happening. D'oh!
