$70 gigabit guaranteed for life rate not being honored by ATT

I signed up for the inaugural $70 per month for life plan when I moved in 5.5 years ago. Now ATT is saying that plan was not guaranteed and they are increasing the monthly charge to $74.99.  Has anyone else had this problem of them lying and increasing the price on a guaranteed rate?

I have spoken with a rep and a supervisor and they just say costs have increased so they need to increase their price.  Any suggestions on which regulatory agency I should complain to or should I seek out a lawyer to initiate a (Edited per community guidelines) suit as I imagine there are many people here in San Jose and statewide that have been cheated in the same way?

As mentioned by dave006, it could be tax and fee increases as dictated by the  county, city, or state. All providers do that. Your basic cost stays the same but it slowly creeps up as taxes/fees are increased. Nothing you can do about that.

There are not taxes or fees on Internet in my location - the listing on the bill is just for 1 gigabit internet and that is is!

I'm surprised. I'd take a closer look or call Billing for an explanation.

I did call ATT and they said their costs had gone up so they raised the rate.  When I asked what guaranteed for life meant when I signed up they just effectively said tough - this is the new rate.  Very frustrating.

Then file a complaint with the BBB. Those go straight to Corporate and someone from the Office of the President will contact you.

@tonyemerson   You don't happen to have a copy of the "fine print" from when you signed up for the lifetime service that shows the terms, do you?  I'd love to see exactly what it said.  AT&T pushed out this price increase seemingly across the board and I wonder if they messed up and pushed it to those special accounts like yours.

I can't find any contract I signed up for - if anyone has details of what the launch gigabit fiber offer was I would appreciate getting a copy of it.

Without the contract or paperwork you were given, and signed or agreed to, it's going to be difficult.

Hello. Same thing just happened to me. I was guaranteed a rate that would not increase during sign up. It just did by $5. When I called to inquire that I was promised no increases they proceeded to ignore me and just offer discounts via auto pay and said it was due to increase on their end. No care for breaking what they had promised.  And yeah don’t really have the original contract.

I don’t think contacting BBB would do a thing. They aren’t a government regulated agency and are often bought out by companies.

@stevenza

There is no price for life/guarantee rate would never increase. Per Terms of Service rates are subject to change. Fortunately they do not change often.

A BBB complaint gets forwarded to AT&T's upper management, usually getting you contact from their Office of the President within a few business days. What is submitted to the BBB is not brushed aside or bought out like you claim.
