reverse dns

I need a PTR for my SMTP server so my emails can be accepted by gmail and the likes.

a reverse DNS lookup of my IP shows the following even after creating my own prt record on Cloudflare.  I would also like port 25 opened if that is allowed.  I understand the risks involved with this.

$ dig soa <redacted>.50.104.in-addr.arpa

; <<>> DiG 9.16.1-Ubuntu <<>> <redacted>.50.104.in-addr.arpa

18.50.104.in-addr.arpa. 300     IN      SOA     ns0.attdns.com. eiss-dns.att.com. 201405{{Payment Card Number detected, text hidden}}000 300

This shows that ns0.attdns.com is the NS server of authority for this reverse zone. I need to have AT&T create some PTR records for me.

Hi @airberg583,

We understand that your trying to set up reverse DNS (PTR). We hear you, and we'll be glad to assist you.

Setting up reverse DNS (PTR) records is crucial for ensuring that your SMTP server’s emails are accepted by major email providers like Gmail.

Let’s address this step by step:

Maps an IP address to a name. This is very important for finding return paths, particularly with e-mail and security) (e.g., 66.94.230.32 = www.yahoo.com). You can submit your PTR request to dnsrequests@att.com from an authorized contact’s email address. In your email, include the IP address for which you need a PTR record and the corresponding fully qualified domain name (FQDN) (e.g., mail.domain.com or remote.domain.com).

We recommend that you go through this article about Reverse DNS for more information.

To allow your SMTP server to communicate over port 25, you’ll need to ensure that it’s not blocked by your ISP or firewall. AT&T residential accounts typically block port 25 by default due to security concerns. To allow your SMTP server to communicate over port 25, you’ll need to ensure that it’s not blocked by your ISP or firewall. Keep in mind that port 25 is often used for sending email, but it’s also a common target for spam and abuse.

Remember that PTR records are essential for email deliverability, especially when dealing with major email providers. We hope this information helps.
