Is it illegal for internet company to ask me to pay installation for my neighbor?

3 months ago I had internet installed in my place of business where I rent a unit. I was charged a fee for installation. A few weeks later the neighbor in my next door unit wanted to get the same internet connection. The ISP used the cable they had run inside my unit, made a hole to thread a cable from my wall to his and installed a switch. The neighbors internet was in no way independent as it used my electricity with the switch. The internet speed was not as promised & I didn't sign any contract so I decided to email them and tell them I was canceling after the billing period ended. A day or two before the billing period ended I disconnected the switch & cut the cables inside my building. The ISP now wants to charge me for the reinstallation of the neighbors internet. ISP I had was not AT&T, but I'm planning to switch to them so I figured I'd ask here. Thanks for your help.

Thanks for the reply. Here is more info. Cable was inside the building I rent and I was charged a fee for them to install it. It provided Internet to the guy next door but only because the ISP installed a switch which was plugged into my electricity and the made a hole in my wall and threaded the cable through. It wasn't an independent connection which should and could have been independent. I merely cut the wires inside my building nothing inside or outside of his unit. If it would have been independent then the guy next door wouldn't have had any issue nor would they have had to redo the connection. Legally I don't think they have any right to ask me to pay the re installation. AT&T wouldn't use those lines since they told me they use DSL (phone lines) I thank you again for your opinion though and hope that more info I put here will help.

Thanks again for the input. I appreciate your thoughts. I had asked them to make the connection independently when they installed the neighbors Internet and they didn't care. From what I've seen in any Internet installation all connections from one neighbor to another in any building is not running inside the actual unit because if not any angry neighbor could disconnect their neighbors Internet. To my understanding all connections are made on the outside and are fully independent. I didn't cut any wires on the outside just the ones inside of my unit which I no longer needed.

I agree with you bud, if they ran it through my home I'd cut it too. They shuoldn't be able to do that, even for the other guys sake.

So I consulted a couple of attorneys and they both said that it is ridiculous of them to ask me to pay since they could and should have had an independent connection. If they weren't able to make it independent then they would have had to have something in the contract instating that, but since they could and should have had a line running on the outside not on the inside. Nothing they can do now but what they should have done in the first place.. Connect the neighboring unit independently. Thank you all for your input. Anyone know how I can close this thread?
