Phone line available but no DSL?????

Recently bought a house in somewhat of a rural area, but not even 5 miles from town and I am being told that I do not even have DSL available! ATT says they can provide me home phone service, but not DSL. How is this even possible?  Uverse is out of the question, but i thought DSL was available to just about everyone. Using my cell phone data for emails and web browsing is getting pricey. Has anyone come across this?!

I have absolutely experienced this. I just spent the entire afternoon, again, on the phone with AT&T trying to understand why I cannot get DSL from them. In the meanwhile, they keep sending me a bill for phone service that they told me I needed to have so they can process my request for DSL. This has been going on since September 4th.
I am told that even though my neighbor behind me has DSL, that the "Port" is full and no new customers can fit in. Someone has to die, not pay their bill, or move in order for me (or the next person on the list) to get DSL. They also will not tell me how many people are before me on the list.
This Friday an installer is coming out to give me a jack and run lines for my new phone account that I do not want. I need to pay for the installation of the jack and another $49.00 for new service just to be on a waiting list for DSL, not to mention having a new monthly bill for phone service.
Ask me how AT&T can charge me for assigning me a phone number back in September when my home has no jacks and no lines of any kind. They are insane and I must be also for allowing them to install phone lines so I can be on their darn DSL waiting list. Anyone else here feeling my pain? They did however credit me $111.00.

I am in the exact same boat. We just bought a house where no service is available! We rely on internet for everything. We use the internet to stream movies and cartoons for the kids. We use the internet to pay all our bills and complete all of our business. We use the internet to keep in touch with family all over. If I had known that my new home could not be serviced by any of the numerous companies in my region I wouldn't have bought the darn house!!!! Apparently that's one of the reasons that the previous owner sold because they couldn't get services. AT&T tells us they can give us landline service and DirecTV but they can't give us internet!!! Time Warner Cable offers internet, TV and phone less than a mile from my house and told me that I could pay a compensation fee to install and line and when I asked how much they told me $50,000 and when I laughed thinking they were joking the woman said no ma'am that's how much it will cost to run a line to your house. She said perhaps you can take up a petition with your neighbors and you all can share the cost to have a line installed. I told her even with all the neighbors on the road splitting $50,000 there's no way anybody could afford it, or would even take the time to listen to the sales pitch. Of course we could get satellite internet but we're looking at about $80 a month and being that we are a family on limited income we can't afford that. Where I was living I paid $40 a month for high speed internet with Frontier Communications and $8 a month on Netflix and my children were satisfied and we could do all of our business online. In fact we could run two TVs streaming Netflix, two mobile devices and a desktop computer all at the same time without any glitches. Now I'm looking at an $80 a month internet bill and an $80 a month satellite TV bill and on our fixed income it's just impossible. Basically we have had to give up everything we been accustomed to. Now I have to drive back and forth between businesses to pay bills and send documents when I have personal business to complete. Or I have to drive back and forth to my relative's house and use their computer to do my personal business and that's just not fun because nobody wants you hanging around their house using their computer all the time. I come from a generation that grew up without internet and without a computer and I know I'll just have to learn to live that way again but the thing is our lifestyle have changed and we've become very dependent and accustomed to having the convenience of such services and then when you are forced to do without it's traumatic and stressful. I've sat down and just cried because I feel so overwhelmed.
