Why does AT&T keep raising my monthly internet fee by $5?

Hi,

I am just wondering why AT&T keeps raising my monthly fee for internet by $5, without doing anything to improve the service. Does anyone else have this problem?

If operating costs go up then so do our bills. Quality of service isn't required to go up with it. However, cost shouldn't go up often. Perhaps once a year or with a special change like discount for autopay reduced if by credit card. So if you costs go up several times a year or such then something else is going on.

So is cost going up often or only about once a year?

Good evening @Stephen_s

In February of 2023 there was a $5 price increase on all internet services across the board, then in July there was a similar $5 increase. This price increase did impact all customers with at&t and was due to the rising costs to maintain the infrastructure and help build a stronger fiber connection in the areas serviced. While we do understand the frustration of rising costs we do want to make sure you enjoy the services you do have and make sure they work properly. If there is anything we can do help (including checking on the pricing) please feel free to reach out to us at 1-800-288-2020 and we will make sure to lead you in the right direction.

Hope this helps,

Hunter

ATT has not improved the infrastructure in my area for over 20 years. It is terribly slow. The infrastructure here is so old we cannot be updated for faster service, and this has been the case all along.

I am loathe to help pay for fiber optic improvements firstly because the government has provided funds for that. and secondly because it is not happening where I live.

I suspect some of the increase is to offset the cost of identity tracking after the cyber attack, which compromised my entire identity. Thanks for that

Do you decrease the cost if when the maintenance cost falls or still increase per your schedule?

When does maintenance costs fall?

ATT hourly workforce, those who install and maintain operations are union employees with benefits, just using an average cost of living adjustment of 3% (about what social security recipient receive each year tied to cost of inflation) means cost can increase 10% over three years with compounding.

Add in changing costs such as vehicle with fuel, maintenance , insurance, etc guaranteed most things that require delivery of any type (boat, plane, train, truck, etc) will see increases.

Which is why fiber internet is such a bargain… compare ATT rates from 2015, pre fiber….

Pro internet 3 list price $47, 12 month discount $17 for net $30 then add $7 equipment fee means initial monthly cost of $37 for 3 down and .6 up.

Elite internet 6 list $52

Max internet 12/1 list $57

Max Plus 18/1.5 list $62

Max Turbo 24/3 list $72

Power 45/6 list $82

Power Plus 75/8 list $92

first fiber 2016 1000 list $119 while internet 100 list was $99.

NOW in 2024

Fiber speeds 300 list $65, 500 list $75 and 1000 list $90 before discount.

All very nice I suppose if there's adequate infrastructure, which simply is not the case in many areas, mine included. Nor, as I posted before, has there been any improvement to the infrastructure in my area in over 25 years. People like me, whose internet goes out with every weather change, really ought to pay way less than we do, rather than having increases, ever. I live less than 5 miles from people with no internet services at all, and ATT is not making any effort to reach them. So the competitors will.

I think you should get a discount if you use self-check at the grocery store but that’s not an option.  🙄🙄🙄

The cost of bread, soft drinks, hamburgers, beef, chicken, water, sewer, electricity, garbage service, etc. have all gone up over the years.  I wish it was otherwise.  None of it is measurably better (and often worse) than it was before.

OP might be referring to CC users.

An option to offset the increase was offered if one chooses to use it.

I was paying $45/month (I understand that this was some kind of a special deal) when I started with AT&T in 11/2020 and my bill just went up to $70/month as of 5/2024. Do AT&T's operating expenses really go up ~10% a year?
