ATT Internet Air Latency Issue

Wanted to provide an update on latency and internet air.

I previously had ATT Fixed Wireless and it worked satisfactorily. Download speed may have only been 50-60mbps, but latency was 30-40ms. Due to phasing out of ATT Fixed Wireless, I had to switch to ATT Internet Air. I have not moved and the tower has not moved. I live 0.6 miles from the tower and have direct line of sight. We live in rural area in which there are less than 50 homes within 5 square miles around tower. I was using ATT Fixed Wireless as my primary and Starlink as secondary. Starlink gets 100 - 150mbps download on average and has a latency of 25 - 35ms.

Now ATT Internet Air performance.

1) Download and upload speeds are 2 - 3 x what I was getting on ATT Fixed Wireless (150 - 200 mbps down) - GREAT!

2) Latency is extremely poor performance (100 - 300ms on average). Recall I have direct line of sight less than 1 mile to tower. All green bars on ATT Internet Air router. Using the router in the default configuration (setting the unit outside facing the tower does not improve latency).

Called ATT support, after 45 minutes the supervisor told me flat out that ATT could not or would not do anything to improve latency.

Should be noted I am full into ATT. We have 5 ATT cell phones, a mobile hotspot, ATT Internet Air and been a customer for over 18 years. The mobile hotspot (7 years old) gets 50 - 75mbps download and average 30ms latency from the back of house with 4 walls between it and cell tower. So now my Starlink is primary and ATT Internet Air is secondary. If T-Mobile or Verizon Internet was available I would switch today.

My humble opinion is that ATT knows there is a latency issue and perhaps even has tuned the network to cause the longer latency. They fact that you can find postings on this forum and all over redit just confirms the issue is real for many people. Since ATT seems to not care about this customer issue, I will start considering alternatives. While ATT Internet Air is cheap ($55 per month) compared to Starlink ($120 per month), at least Starlink has decent latency numbers.

I suspect two fold, one is different bandwidth frequency… Fixed Wireless is band 30 at 2300 MHz while most ATT AIR seems to be in the 660 to 850 MHz range.

The other is changing IP using CGNAT, while both products are CGNAT I suspect your AIR product is connecting to an upstream device that has the public IP address in a further distance, likely out of your state which would account for the increased latency as the data is traveling a longer distance potentially with more hops.
