Compatible wi-fi extenders for CGW450 hub

I have just installed my ATT Internet air and need extenders.  Can I purchase compatible extenders or must I "rent" them from ATT?

And be prepared to stay on hold for 50 min before giving up in frustration.

ATThelp, that's a really stupid answer to give in the forums.  It's the kind of general answer that having in the forums would be really useful rather than have someone have to make a phone call to find out if it's even possible.

BTW, according to this press release, they do offer extenders...

We also offer add-on Wi-Fi extenders to create a whole-home mesh Wi-Fi eliminating dead zones2.

__________

2 $10/mo. for up to 5 Extenders. Number of extenders determined at the sole discretion of AT&T.

so the answer is yes, apparently they offer them.  You'd need to call to order them from AT&T.

OTOH, whether that's the best idea (vs ordering some third party extender) remains to be seen.

I gave up trying to find compatible extenders.  I waited on hold for a very long time and after what seemed forever and my firstborn child, they mailed an extender.  You may only order one extender at a time.  So after setting up the extender and determining that I needed another one, I called again.  Much to my surprise the second extender order took no time at all.  Bottom line, $10/month for up to 5 extenders.

AT&T will only recommend their own extenders for a monthly fee.  However, pretty much any Wi-Fi extender should work.

AT&T will rent compatable extenders.

Third party extenders can co-exist with the AT&T gateways but do not directly interoperate with them (e.g., are not compatable).

I think you and I define "compatible" differently.  No, third party extenders do not set up a mesh network with enhanced handoff capability; they do not tightly integrate with it.

However, the lion's share of third party extenders should be quite capable of connecting to the Gateway and relaying traffic from locally connected clients.  In my book, since they can connect to the Gateway, they are compatible with it.

I currently have Internet Air and my Netgear AC1900 EX7000 Mesh Range Extender works great and any Extender with a WPS button should work fine as the Internet Air hub has a WPS button it should be easy to pair a Extender with it.
